Oops. Thought the OP was asking what a next Fender purchase might be. Didna realize it was about the OP.

I guess a Jazzmaster is a sound that is missing. I have a modern player Jag with P-90's that fills the gap between my LP and Tele. P-90's own their own distinct part of the electric guitar sound.

You could also get a real Strat. One without a humbucker.

I love the looks and sound of the Jazzmasters and Jaguars, but I never really bonded with either them...I used to have an original 1964 Fender Mustang, but I never bonded with it, either, outside of the looks (aged Oly White/Yellow Creme finish with a red tortoise pickguard--beautiful). The tiny neck profile and short scale threw me off from the G&L instruments I owned and played at the time.

P-90's are my pickup of choice (I installed a P90 in the neck position on my Telecaster and Pete Biltoft SP90's in my Stratocaster), so the modern player Jazzmaster would be the choice between those two...however...

This is probably/possibly my next guitar purchase:

MODERN PLAYER TELECASTER® THINLINE DELUXE
Model: 0241202
$609.99 MSRP

I prefer the one finished in black...and my wedding anniversary is in April, if anybody wants to buy me a gift! (no, seriously, April 17th...)

I've played a couple of this particular guitar, and the double volume/double tone pots coupled with the P90 pickups and semi-hollow (Thinline) body makes for a deliciously different sound than my other Telecaster...

You might consider this instrument, too, since you're in an experimental mood.

That's a pretty cool guitar. I recall watching a demo with it and it's tonality the person had reminded me of a late 60's/early 70's Kieth Richards vibe. That kind of dark, hollow sound like on "Gimme Shelter."

Modwiz, I am actually leaning towards a "REAL STRAT". American made Nitro Satin with the SSS configuration. Excellent price and looks good. My only issue is that it seems to be made with MIM materials, (alder body, etc.), although the hardware is obviously american upgrades. If that is the case, why not pick up a MIM SSS Strat and just upgrade the hardware? I can get a MIM Strat for under $250 in my area. :? My total price could be less than $500.

That actually sounds like a good plan. You could save some coin, at least.

I'm going to be getting an Am. Std. Fretless Jazz, to go along with my Am. Std. Precision. I hope they get along, and don't fight over who get's played next.

Let's see. I have a FSR wine/vanilla HRD III on a UPS truck heading my way. Should arrive on Monday. I also have some tele bridge height adjustment screws and The Fender Telecaster book. They will be here tomorrow. Not too bad for a bass player. I bought three Fender guitar stands, a 350 Rumble and a foot switch for the Rumble during the Summer.

Still no free T-shirt. Fender does not appreciate my business. They may say they appreciate but, talk is cheap and so are the decision makers at FMIC.

Decision made, purchase is complete and here is the report! Ran into a 2008 American Standard SSS in Charcoal Frost Metalic. Serial number checks out, made in Corona Cali. The only issue I found is one of the tone controls sticks on 10, no pot issues, finish after a good cleaning was pristine. The pick guard was changed from white to pearl finish. The rear plate is original with original plastic detailing the use of Fender strings. GC said they would take care of whatever I found wrong with it, or bring it back within 30 days for a refund. The guitar included a hard Fender case. Total price ... out the door ... tax, tag and tittle ... $600. Not only does she look fantastic, sounds beautiful! very easy to play and a great compliment to the MIM HSS candy Apple Red Strat and Black Paisley Tele. Now I have my eye on the last piece of the puzzle ... a 1989 Heartfield RR9 by Fender. How did I do? What do you think of the RR9?
Thanks for all your input!!

Sounds like a pretty good deal to me. 8) Can't tell you anything about the Heartfield, other than the fact I vaguely remember them when they came out but haven't seen them since then. I was a beginning noob bassist in 1989, so I couldn't really say $@!& about any gear at that time frame. I'm sure somebody like Brother Dave has some knowledge about them.

By the way, I noticed your location is Tampa. I lived in St. Pete for most of my life and Brandon for a couple of years. I remember that Guitar Center that is on West Hillsborough Avenue used to be Thoroughbred Music, I believe. In fact the last time I was there it still was. Do you know if Green Shift Music and Comics is still in business? I used to go in there with a buddy of mine and pick up some used gear on occasion. That was in the early to mid-90's.

Yup, same Hillsborough location! Green Shift is still in business as well. I just visited a week or so ago, cool place to find all kinds of cool vintage instruments, stereo equipment and everything in between!!!

[quote="Bogiedr"...2008 American Standard SSS....one of the tone controls sticks on 10...[/quote]

Nice score Bogiedr! The tone pot is part of the "Delta Tone", and it has a detente at 10 that takes the tone pot out of the circuit for a "wide open" pup. This is a feature, perfectly normal. Enjoy!

I would vote for the jazz. But not modern player. I would go with the Classic player although I'm not sure if it is american or Mexican.

Since you seem torn between a Jazzmaster and a Strat, might I suggest the Pawn Shop Series Jaguarillo? Very reasonably priced now on the online retailer sites. I purchased mine for the short scale and general sexiness of the thing (Faded Sonic Blue). The workmanship is quite impressive, the standard Strat pups in the neck and middle position generate a lot of chime, and the Atomic Humbucker in the bridge adds some spice to the mix. I really like the simplified Strat-style switching (the placement, not so much, but only a minor quibble), though it is not as versatile (or cumbersome) as the original Jag's slider circuits. And of course, you get a very capable locking tremolo. Check it out...
