Just think of how awesome a guitar player you could have been by now if you had only spent the last 10 years practicing instead of obsessing over pickups and roasted maple necks.

I just observed a performance of the Messiah Oratorium by Händel.
And I am ruined for the night - nothing I play, myself or on the stereo, will be even in remotely the same league.

Sure, there is more music to be composed. Much good music too. Even great music. But I am unsure whether we are ever going to make music that comes close to old masters.

I haven't watched the video in the original post, but I am cautiously optimistic about the potential for new good music.

However, after watching a few awards shows, etc., I am more sure than ever that such music will not be coming out of the pop world.

At one time, while pop music was "safer" than the corresponding era's "wilder" music (rock & roll, funk, metal, etc., there were enough gems in the genre to make it worth sifting through.

Also, pop has become so derivative and disposable that I might as well listen to the pop music of a decade or two previously; I've already heard most of what they do.

...and while I'm not a purist by any stretch of the imagination (I love the amalgamation of styles and genres), some of the matchups (even the ones that look good on paper) are just horrendous...last night, Keith Urban (great guitarist) and Miguel (great R&B voice) absolutely ruined "Ain't No Sunshine"...the Armadillo 'Tween stated, "There aren't enough remote controls in the world!" She meant the channel needed to be changed faster than technology has made it possible, lol...

There will always be good new music coming out. You just have to work to find it.

This week, Paladium broadcast an episode of Darryl's House (Darryl Hall) and the guest was Joe Walsh.

He had an interesting, but somewhat depressing, insight into the Music Industry today.

He basically said that there is no real Music being made anymore, that it's all controlled and contrived. One of his quotes cited a recent Beyonce song where he stated that: " It had 3 writers, 4 producers, 3 engineers and the song had 8 words !", he further went on to say that recorded music today is patched together: "with separate recordings laid down to a track from a drum machine... no one is in the same room at the same time".

All this aside, if you can catch this on re-run do so. Joe, Darryl and the band play some amazing sets 'Live' !

cheers!

In regards to modern pop music he is right, but music as a whole he is way off the mark. There are still a huge amount of "proper" bands making music, it's just not handed to you on a plate anymore and you have to dig just a little deeper.

The music he is referring to is a tiny part of what is being made, which just so happens to also be the sound that rolls the big bucks in at the moment.

Once people get bored of it, who knows what will happen.
