Shortly after the "History Detectives" show Dylan said that it wasn't his guitar. Who to believe? I do know that Christie's would be reluctant to offer it w/o evidence. A couple of years ago they pulled a 1930's Auto Union racing car from auction that would have sold for millions because there was a controversy over originality. Christies has their reputation to protect, other parties interest is money to be made.

That's too much for that guitar. It wasn't his main guitar by any means and it certainly doesn't have the history behind it like Clapton's guitar that's for sure.

After Christies took their 30%, and fees they took home about $650.000 Not a bad haul for letting a guitar sit around the house I'd say

Aren't auction fees added to the closing cost which the buyer pays?

As far as I know most auction houses deduct a set %, which varies house to house. when I've been to auctions and paid I just gave them, cash, or credit, no checks. Then I just walked away. Does anyone know something different?

I seem to recall reading that the buyer actually agreed to pay the fees in this case.

This was taken from the original article I linked to:

"A buyer identified only as a private individual agreed to pay $965,000 at Christie's, including the auction house's fees, for the sunburst-finish electric guitar."

I've been under the impression that the Blackie, which 'sold' for slightly less, actually brought in excess of $1million including fees.

Seems like Mr. Barnum knew what he was talking about so very long ago.
