But it has already been decided.... 302s and 429s just are not in tune....

Cars and frequencies? Apples and oranges more applicably. Decisions? Lots of playing free with the subject matter and intent.

Thank you, BMW, for a thoughtful reply to the subject.

My pleasure. The thing that got me thinking about factors and multiples is my limited knowledge of the science of sound and frequency. It's something we all sort of already know as guitarists and bassists even if we don't ever think much about it but pitch intervals are on a logarithmic scale … meaning proportions are pretty much everything. Octaves on a guitar for example. The twelfth fret is one octave and it splits the string length precisely in two. Halving it yet again brings you up another octave and so on. It's a recurring theme in my observations on music in general. When I factored the numbers 5 and 11 seemed just wrong to my sensibilities. I have a gut feeling there is more to this thing than just a joke. I'm not yet convinced about the 440 thing causing widespread bloodshed and such but I do think there must be naturally occurring resonances and that aligning with them must be somehow more soothing to our bodies and souls. We are after all built from the materials of the earth, regardless of creation or evolution. Ashes to ashes and such.

What you just wrote got me thinking about something that happened a long time ago. I had this friend who was a really good violin teacher. One evening at my house he was explaining different types of music theory. He said, "You want to know something really interesting?" He explained that music has an effect on us in many different ways. Then he took two harmonic notes on the violin and stroked them with long bow strokes.

He started slowly and progressively move one finger till the two notes broke out of harmony and became dissident with each other. Slowly he started to bring the two notes back together. The closer the dissident tone came to being back into harmony, the more irritating the sound was. It resembled that feeling you get when a person drags their fingernails down a chalkboard. And was the most intolerable right before they broke into beautiful harmony with each other. I then understood why a violin is such an irritating instrument to listen too when people are learning.!

My friend went on to explain that Hitler understood this principle of dissident tone and in fact de-tuned the engines on his bombers to wreak terror to those who where about to be bombed. So yes, harmonic frequencies do effect us in many different ways. He also said, “Isn’t it a lot like human relationships.” Things become the most painful before we break into harmony!”

The big problem with 432 Hz tuning is that the A major scale (and others) contain "the brown note."
It may be "natural" but you don't want it.

As I understand it 'the brown note' is low enough to be out of the range of human hearing, like around 5 hz or so. I also have heard it is just a myth. Nice try, though ….

I'm sure it is more real than the "naturalness" of 432 Hz.

I've been to clubs that looked and sounded like that.

… but I thought you said 432, not 423.
