I am just south of the boarder from Mr. BMW. We live on 20 acres in the wilderness some 12 miles from the nearest town that does not even have one stop light! Population: 3200! Nearest big city is 70 miles away. I can drive there faster then my sister-in-law can get to work in Seattle driving only 9 miles. So close enough if we want a night on the town. I can walk into almost every business and people know me by first name. I know everyone from the local prosecuting attorney, sheriff, to most of the doctors in the local hospital. If I need medical help for some reason, I just call one, go in the back door of ER and get taken care of in minutes, often without even using insurance. I can play my guitar through two amps at 1 am as loud as I want. Or stand and on my patio in my underwear. Plenty to do and love most all of it. We leave the keys in all the cars and trucks. I do travel a lot and spend time in some of the largest cities in the world. Always glad to be back to the quiet of our wilderness refuge. Ah country living, it is easy to do!

Matt, I like both. Each has advantages. A condo at Marina Towers, and, a place out in the country. :D

Do you have a place in Marina City..??

I lived in (managed) the Intercontinental Hotel @ 505 N. Michigan for 6 years and then 535 N. Michigan.

That's about a 2 min. walk to Marina City (depending upon how long it took to cross Mich. Ave.). Used to have a great little restaurant there on the 2nd. fl.

cheers!

I think I know almost exactly where you live or at least pretty darned close. Very near a state park on the south end of a lake with a French name and a town with the same name as the lake. Also due south of a town named after a famous trio. I've been though that part of the world numerous times. When I was a kid our family spent a many a weekend at the larger French named lake just north of yours and I also skied there as well in winters.

That's a pretty good way of keeping incognito. And you're right, I am close to that area. Love living here. And I also have a lot of good friends in BC and up in AB. I can even speak pretty good Canadian! Big cities are just not for me. I like visiting them but I wouldn't want to live there. I can understand those who grew up in a city feeling uncomfortable being anywhere else.

I remember when I lived in the state of Montana I had a friend come from the city to visit me out in the country. He was supposed to stay the whole weekend with us. It was a nice warm summer day when he arrived, so I took him down under the shade of some huge Willow trees. Relaxing, I started a conversation with him. He soon became restless and started pacing about, and then asked me, "What do you do here?" And I smiled and said this is what I like doing. Couple hours later he got in his car and went back to the city. He just could not imagine relaxing in nature for a while and enjoying some good conversation. He was used all the sights and sounds in the action of living in the city, and wanted to go out and play pool or do something like that. I guess it's what we become accustomed to and what makes us feel most comfortable.

But yes, it's nice to live in a rural area. Where I can see the Milky Way, and be woken by finches singing in the bushes outside. Where there's no chlorine in the water because it comes from a well, and the front door is only for the undertaker.

Excuse me for a couple of minutes, while I add another log to the fireplace, and pour myself some mulled wine.

  you got it right except the not married part. She is not as brave as me to stand on the patio in 6 degree temps in her underwear! I am working on that though....

I'm a city boy, always have been, but love the countryside too. The amenities of the city are necessary to me, but I love taking my motorcycles out a couple times a week for a nice ride in the country. Everything about rural life is great too, just what you prefer or find necessary. I can't help but think that half the people in the city would move to the country if they could, and vice versa.
Now this being a guitar site, I want to mention an observation. I am on Craigslist a lot looking for interesting guitars. Many postings from people in the outlying areas, but they generally are asking more than what you can purchase one new. I don't know if they have been initially paying more, due to lack of competition in their area, or think there must be one big fish in the city that will take the bate.

You in underwear in 6 degree temps (whether F or C) is one exception I think we can make to the rule that we want pics...

I think time is a factor. Out in the country side, we tend to take things slowly. People may not be in such a hurry to unload, and can take their time to wait for good offers. A city person might expect is guitar to sell within a day or two, while a country person might think weeks or months.

Also, the price is more often a starting point. The seller might have marked up the item because he expects reasonable people to negotiate. City people are probably more used to paying the sticker price, and then move on. Out here, the seller tells how much he wants, not how much he's willing to accept. You do the dance and see whether you can agree. If you can't, that's fine too.

See what you mean, but I'm talking about the person that went to his mom and pop store, bought a MIM for $650, including setup and guitar strap and is now asking $500 on Craigslist. I won't bother negotiating when I can buy several close buy from guys that paid less than $400 at GC and are quick to sell for $250.

Well, I wouldn't be doing that at all and especially with a stock MIM Strat. However, if I have something that I feel is of more value than the going street price, for whatever reason, I won't sell it until I get what I think it's worth. Waiving a wad of new $20 bills under my nose doesn't move me. I don't know if it's rural living or not but I would rather give something away to a friend for free than let a stranger lowball me.

I watch Craigslist almost everyday and I see there are ridiculous prices asked by people, both in the city and country. Someone will have a 1980s Gibson Sonex and think, WOW this is a vintage Gibson, and then ask $1100 for it. They do not realize it was a cheap budget guitar made for a few years. Or as pointed out, have a slightly used MIM Strat and ask the same price as GC has it. Many people just do not understand the market value of items. It could be some country folks too, are a bit more disconnected from market values being in a more isolated area. Craislist is also, from my experience, kind of like a Mexican Market, start high and then negotiate. Sometimes ignorance also turn up a good deal, like a nice Clapton Blackie body I picked up for $100. BTW 6 degrees (F) here this am!!! And i know it is COLD because I was just out on the porch in my underwear!

I hastily ran out in my bare feet about an hour ago because the grader was on my street plowing snow and I didn't want my car to be trapped inside a snowbank. He was only about fifty feet away from plowing me in and I didn't have time to put on socks and shoes or a coat. -30C here today. (-22F)

That stung a little, I'll tell you.

GOOD GRIEF! I hope you still had skin on the bottom of your feet when you got back inside! I figured this arctic front was hitting you ABers pretty hard. So did he give you time to move your car??? and were you also in your boxers??? LOL!

No, I had clothes on, just no socks and shoes.

Yah, I think he didn't see me at first because he was prolly concentrating on holding his line along the curb but as soon as he saw me with no shoes running to my car he stopped and let me move it. This little town I live in usually doesn't do any snow removal. Their thinking is, why plow when it's just going to melt in the spring anyway? We've had a couple of serious dumps the past week or so and some streets people are getting stuck so they're pretty much forced to plow. There's never any money in the budget for snow removal and we always hear about how they're gonna hafta raise taxes and whatnot. There's always money for things like new exposed aggregate planter boxes and trash cans on our little main street though. Anything related to beautification they'll squander the whole budget on but maintenance and infrastructure? Not a chance.
