If you are looking to staying clean then all you need is the amp. To get the best clean sound use your EQ settings on the amp until you find the sound you are looking for. Also use roundwound strings and play near the neck for the most "jazz" sound. Maybe even use a foam dampener to get that upright sound.

I am no jazz player ,but from time to time I give it a try :) IMO you just need the guitar + amp. Use mainly neck PU , roll back the treble until you get the tone you want ! It is preferable to use heavier gauge - 11s or 12s . I've tried 13's FLATWOUNDS on my Hagstrom Viking , which really worked well.

I'm not a jazz player either, but I agree with the above posts. Clean amp with the treble rolled back and bass pumped up a little. Maybe put a little reverb on it and you should be good to go!

That depends on the type of jazz. Certain types of jazz musicians are probably those who use flatwounds the most. Also, wound G strings.

Which means heavy gauge strings.

Actually some jazz players will use just a touch of phasing, though, Matt doesn't seem to use any effects. He plays a lot of those Wes Montgomery style octaves, though.

I'm still looking for that *sound*, you know the one that you ear in your head...
my set up is good : Champ 12 with an Ag-95 but it's like something's missing...
It's only my 2nd week with this amp, so i'm working on it...
i found out that there is difference in the sound when i use a pic with a 2mm and over...

Not necessarily I have three packs of GHS Precision Flatwound 009-042's they also make the on 011-046 and others. La Bella make a 009-039 extra lights. Jazz players love flatwounds.

The best Jazz amp I know of is a big one, the Roland JC-120. It's big but it's not all that heavy by comparison to other amps of its size. Heavier than a Champ, of course. I'm not convinced a little amp like the Champ12 will adequately cover that sonic territory. You're prolly not interested in buying an amp but I thought you should know anyway, just in case. There really is nothing else quite like it anymore. I'm actually a little surprised they still make it and have not changed it very much since the 70's.

My two cents…

Roland JC-120

Just think of how awesome a guitar player you could have been by now if you had only spent the last 10 years practicing instead of obsessing over pickups and roasted maple necks.

P-90's or soapbar pickups sound especially hi-fi imo. You might want to look into it for that jazz sound you're after. Nice guitar you've got there, btw.

+2

As well, keep the guitar's volume control(s) rolled back from max, especially when chording. That will help limit the signal to prevent the amp from clipping.
