Now that Thanksgiving is over and Black Friday has done its damage, it's time to start practicing the Christmas songs we're going to bust out around the Yule Log. I just got done watching The Grinch Who Stole Christmas and looked up the tab for "You're A Mean One, Mr. Grinch," so I can strum along as I belt out a passable basso profundo a la Thurl Ravenscroft.

What Christmas songs are y'all partial to playing?

Edit: Minor grammatical fix.

Adeste Fideles, heavy overdrive version.

My favourite Christmas song to play and/or listen to are the centuries old "Coventry Carol" as recorded by John Denver on his "Rocky Mountain Christmas" album.I've loved this carol since early childhood and that's responsible for triggering my interest and love of mediaeval music and madrigals.Another beautiful contemporary Christmas song to play is "The Stable Light" by Emmy Lou Harris's Christmas album by the same name.

I play in a school jazz band, catering from year 10 through to year 12. Around this time of the year we start rehearsing a bunch of cheesy, simple christmas songs. Eg; Let it snow, which is incredibly ironic cause it's the total opposite of snowing conditions here now. We usually play them for a bunch of old people/hardcore christians in the steaming hot and crowded old town hall that my community has.
The songs only have a maximum of 4 chords. Commonly chords like C, D, Am and E.

How exciting. *sarcasm*

Every year I say I'm going to record some Christmas songs to give to friends and family.
Christmas comes and goes and still no CD. So I'm keeping up with tradition and I am still talking about recording some Christmas.

A like to play a variety from 'These Are My Favorite Things' to some rockin' 'Dig That Crazy Santa Claus' to even the classics.

For listening, it's pretty much the same, but this one gets the most play around here for us:

"Oh Holy Night" is my all time favorite, it just sounds so nice and spiritual on the guitar. Funny story, it was written by a Belgian priest or monk in the 15 or 1600's(?) and there was a giant storm Christmas night and they could not use the organ for the song for which it was written, so the priest/monk pulled out his guitar and played it on that.

A charming anecdote, but the history of the song is known, and only dates back to the mid 19th century.

My favorite version of it is Jussi Bjoerling:

I've got a few newer old classics for this year's parties.

Rockin' Around The Christmas Tree
and
I Saw Mommy Kissing Santa Claus

I like playing "Sleigh Ride". It can be challenging with a fast tempo. The song actually falls into the category of "Holiday Music" because there is no mention of Christmas in the lyrics.

The best holiday melody of all time (IMO) is "The Christmas Song" AKA "Chestnuts roasting on an open fire".

Sleigh Ride IS a fast one. I heard a metal version of it even faster than the original.

There are different versions (to the tune of Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer). This is one:

Maverick the brown eyed cowboy
Had a very shiny gun
And if you ever saw him
You would turn around and run
All of the other cowboys
Used to laught and call him names
They wouldn’t let poor Maverick
Play in any cowboy games

Then one dusty Christmas Eve
The sheriff came to say
Maverick with your spurs so bright
Be my marshal for tonight

Then how the cowgirls loved him
As they shouted out with glee
Maverick the brown eyed cowboy
You’ll go down in history. :D
