I doubt that there are more than a handful of people on this forum who actually know the real intent and reason for the celebration of Christmas.

:(

So true.... It is amazing the power of sentimentalism. That too of the driving force behind a lot of these holidays. Facts are one thing, sentimentalism and traditionalism which overshadows it all is another.

To celebrate that the days no longer grow shorter, you mean? Also known as midwinter, or winter solstice. Christmas started out as a mix between Saturnalia and Sol Invictus, and later got a good dollop of Yule mixed in, celebrating Odin the Yulefather and the Wild Hunt.

I think it should be celebrated according to tradition too. Like the old Norse law that every free man and woman must brew beer, an equal measure grain for the husband and the wife, and celebrate yule with the household for as long as the beer lasts. Failure to brew beer for yule or sharing with your household could lead to forfeiting your land to the crown, or even expatriation.

Wassail, friends!

I don't see the big box stores offering anything more on this occasion than they do on any of their other sale days. It's usually 15% and they'll select a few special items to take a lower profit margin on, but they're definitely not losing money.

I thought it was almost an insult when Newegg sent out a 5% coupon off storewide (except for marketplace items and max $50 off), as their big deal. Big deal.
It has to be a lot more off to get me more interested than I am on normal days.
Guitarcenter / Musiciansfriend had a 15% off coupon, but only on a single full price item, excluding half the store, and you had to jump through hoops to get it.
Zzounds didn't have any sale at all - at least not that I could see.
Sweetwater had a few good deals - most of them went quickly, though.

In other words, a big yawn.

In Canada, we always had Boxing Day sales on Dec 26. They were busy but not insane.
I think it will probably be the same kind of deal now that Black Friday is making its way to Canada.
I don't go out on those days. I hate crowds.

I passed on the Black Friday sales too - just too crazy at the stores for me.

My wife pointed out that Amazon had a Les Paul Goldtop 60's Tribute for sale for $689. This on one of their "10 Minute" sales. Must not have had very many because they sold out in seconds.

Was that an Epiphone or a actual Gibson? If so that was a screaming deal!

Excuse to over eat and drink a little Merry Cheer.
