Is it worth it? I have never had one. I don't gig very often and I jam 2-3 times a month.

Definitely worth it.

Just think of how awesome a guitar player you could have been by now if you had only spent the last 10 years practicing instead of obsessing over pickups and roasted maple necks.

After many years of playing without one I decided to get one about a year ago. I did not know what I was missing!!
It is sooo convenient, I can't imagine going without one now.
I even allows me to check my tuning in the middle of a song, if there is a long enough break for the guitar I turn it on and check my tuning.

I see a lot of people keeping the clip on tuners on their headstocks these days. I don't like it. Looks cheap. Floor tuner is the way to go.

I think it looks cheesy too.

I love my floor tuner. I have an old boss TU-2. I have not use the newer TU-3, but I heard good things about it. I would definitely Buy one if I did not have one... It's the quickest and easiest way to keep your guitar ready to roll, no matter what kind of venue or jam you are playing.

I've been using the Korg Pitchblack - maybe not
the best, but it works well for my needs:

No, Tronical is the way to go. But they're not cheap.

I still use a tuning fork much of the time. Once I get the A correct, I tune the rest of the strings by ear relative to it. But that obviously only works in a quiet environment.

Concerning the headstock tuners. If you are on stage tuning, and the band starts ahead of you, the headstock tuners will go nuts from the vibrations and you won't be able to finish your tuning accurately. A floor unit is a better choice.

That's pretty snazzy and not quite as ugly as a clip-on hanging off the ol' headstock. I'm sure they cost a pretty penny too. As you mention, nothing like doing it the ol' fashioned way....

I actually wish I had a second for my acoustic when using both live. Absolutely worth it for me, being able to tune up mid-set is the best.

The Boss TU-3 was one of my best investments in guitar gear.

Yes yoda it is definitely worth it. I have an old Boss TU-2 and use it all of the time.

With newer Gibsons, the Tronical has now become an option when you buy it (re-branded "minE-tune") - then it's about $200 extra. Buying it separately for retrofitting is around $300-$350, depending on model. So yeah, it's horribly expensive.
But I'm convinced that it is the future, simply because it's so easy to use compared to tuning manually. Which means that prices will come down. I fully expect Fender to offer this soon too.
