I think you are on the right track with the Nighthawk. I bought one of those in trans-black when they first came out and I loved all the different tonal possibilities with those three different pickups. All the types of music you want to play can be had through that guitar!

If you are in for Gibson - try the Studio models. Much cheaper than Standards but same or even better quality tone, sustain, etc. They just don't have all that flashy stuff the standards have, hence the drop in price, but all of them are made in USA and GOOD. I own a Gibson Studio LP and have never considered paying the extra $$ for getting a standard. And some of Studios do look lovely as well. Mine is a worn brown, 2 burstbucker pro, alinco V humbuckers in it. That baby sings man :) It costs around 1k $.

These are the ones a guy at work was telling me to buy, but the only ones in a worn finish I can find are the new LPJ's. I wonder if they discontinued the worn studio for these?

Thats kind of what I am thinking too, but I don't want to rule anything out until I have played everything in my price range.
This bout of gas will satisfy me enough until next year at this time, when I will be in a better financial position to purchase a higher end Gibson.

Well they are awesome. Played a Gibson Custom, priced about 3k $, a couple of months ago and the difference between that one and mine was minimal :) Although it did look much more fancy. I didn't go as far as checking sustain and whatnot (would also need my Gibson to do the comparison and I didn't have it with me), but the playability and the sound was very, very similar. So I'd highly recommend the Studio model :)

They were discontinued, it was a limited edition (although not exactly very limited I suppose, otherwise the prices would have been way higher than 1k $). If you live in Europe - do check Thomann's store for Gibsons in range of 400-800€. Doing a quick check at what they've currently got, Gibson Les Paul 70's Tribute Wine Red 2013 seems to be pretty similar. Similar price, has higher output magnets that are ceramic, compared to Burstbucker Pro which are Alnico. But if you can't buy a used Gibson LP Studio Worn Brown Limited, but want it real bad - I'd go for that one and swap the magnets to Burstbucker Pros. The Burstbucker Pros are 40$ more expensive than the Dirty Fingers, weigh 3x as much but are, unless you are into really high-distortion metal shredding stuff, better. As I said, unless you are into metal.
It has different tuners and a slightly different neck profile and different knobs, but tone wise it should sound similar imho :) Again, if you replace the magnets. If you have the chance - do try out a couple LP Studios. I didn't have the chance (as there's no official Gibson retailer in my country), but am very satisfied with what I've got :) So I don't think you could go wrong with buying a Gibson LP studio - definitely a better choice than Epiphones. And I wouldn't go for Juniors either ;)

I just bought a Junior precisely because I wanted a matte finish. SGJ instead of LPJ, though.
Price was not the attraction - the finish was.
There does not seem to be any significant differences apart from the visuals. The hardware and pups (490R/490T) are certainly no worse than my old Les Paul.
What cuts the price seems to be the finish, no pickguard, and dots instead of bar inlays. As I never liked bar inlays anyhow, that was a plus for me.

So far, I am impressed with the Junior. If the LPJ is the same quality as the SGJ, have no worries.

As for the other axes you mentioned, I do have a PRS SE too. It's a very easy guitar to play bends and tapping on. The tuners it come with are horrible, though. And sustain is pretty bad unless you block the trem. But for pure playability, it's really good.
The pickups vary quite a bit between the different PRS SE models, so do some research into what type you prefer.

So I went back to the shop to check out that Cabronita. I like it, but I am not in love with it. I think I am more in love with the price. It sounds good, but is still similar to the teles I already own.
I am probably just going to go with the Nighthawk. I really liked the tones coming out of it the other day, I like the coil tapping and I want something different. This one checks off all boxes
I kinda knew this already, but had to go through the paces and decisions to get here.
As far as a Les Paul goes, as much as I want one, I think I will wait until next year when I know I will be in a better financial position and purchase a Gibson instead.
I'll post some pics once I pick up the Epi.

Don't ask me, I'm allergic to humbuckers. And Gibsons.

Yodacaster the LPJ I ordered over this holiday is scheduled to arrive tomorrow. If you want and if you are still interested in it I could reply on here about my thoughts on it. It will be my first Gibson guitar and at $489 total was a nice deal. 8)

Already having an LP, I opted for the even cheaper SGJ, and based on what I received, I will say that there's nothing wrong with the quality of the junior versus the real deal. The cost cutting hasn't affected the sound or playability. I wish that Fender could give us an American made guitar at that price...

From what I have read the LPJ's have ptc board electronics, so no pots. That would be one thing I would eventually change out, or not depending on how good it sounded to me.

It does, but that doesn't mean no pot changes. There's still room, as the pots go through the board, with the shaft through it. You just have to desolder/solder to the board, using a bit of wire if needed. Or ditch the board, of course.
