Gotoh does make decent tuners. You'll prob be happy with those.

Isn't this a Fender Modern Player Tele Plus? (That's the only "Modern Tele Plus" model I'm aware of.)

Modern Players are Made In China, not Mexico. With retail prices $150 or so less than MIM Std Teles, it's reasonable to suspect that they may skimp on some hardware.

I'd agree with the sentiment that MIM tuners are fine, and have been fine for over a decade. But that's moot since we're not talking about MIM tuners.

Focus, we are getting off topic. :) Yes it is made in China, So that will start the made in china rant. Someone has had to actually replace this type of tuners right?

I'm assuming you have the cheaper Kluson clones on your axe (if you can post a pic, it would be helpful).

There are better quality Kluson-style tuners that have a similar look but better quality; these wouldn't require any drilling of the headstock and they're readily available on eBay, both as new (replacement) units, from somebody who didn't mind modifying their guitar (ie, drilling new holes) and from the "chop shops" (the guys who part out upper-mid grade guitars in an effort to make more money off the parts rather than the whole).

A pic of your current tuners would be most helpful, though...

Nah, I think most people agree on the China stuff - no need for any rants. ;)

Unless yours is different, here's what it looks like, courtesy of Sweetwater:

A problem could be the spacing and hole sizes - in time honored Chinese tradition, if changes can be made to save a penny, changes will be made to save a penny, no matter whether that means incompatibility. Any changes that don't break the listed specs are fair game.
I know there are some metal plates that can be fitted to some non-standard models to allow using smaller quality tuners without drilling and filling.
But honestly, I'm not sure it's worth it. Decent machines are at least $50, good ones even more. Then there's the work. And with the weight shifting, and probably the nut angle too, the tone might change. I'd ask myself whether it's worth it for this guitar, given that it won't improve anything else, and carries a risk of making it sound worse.

Watch your language, Jim.

This is still a family site.
Thank you.

It never ceases to amaze me that sometimes even the most simple and innocuous questions and/or statements can degenerate into a verbal sparring match in which all reference to the original topic takes a back seat to personal attacks.
It's my opinion that once someone starts belittling the integrity or insulting the intellect of another, they have in fact lost their credibility and are in fact saying they have run out of credible evidence or knowledge to defend their statements or opinions and hence have turned to insulting put-downs of the other's character etc. as a last resort.

First of all.....jeez play nice.

Second of all....yes Buxom, I did edit your post...cuz I am sorta a malcontent as well.

Not to hijack the thread too much...but look, I do more of my share of cussing and swearing or whatever you wanna call it. I like it. Its expressive.
But its all about when and where aint it?

You (mostly) don't play Death Metal at a wedding. So.....a little decorum please and thank you and pass the taters!

Group hug,
rob

Honestly, I want Sigur Ros instead of Pachebel for my next one.

Not a Fender this time - it's been a while since Fender had any satin finish ones, but I've bought two new Fenders this year, so I'm allowed a little sidestep :)

Having written specs more than once, I unfortunately feel it is more than a wide brush stroke. Specs truly have to be far more detailed when dealing with low cost producers, because to keep the cost low, they are wont to cut corners.
