I have a fender modern tele plus, and want to put some better tuners on it. I have the 6 in line vintage style tuners on it. I would prefer not to drill anything. Any suggestions?

The tuners on it seem really cheap, I can turn them a quarter turn and nothing happens, each one is a little different. Kind of a pain in the butt to drop tuning. I don't need locking tuners. Are the gotoh a good upgrade?

The Mexi's don't use the best hardware (tuners included).
Gotoh does make decent tuners. You'll prob be happy with those.

Just order legit Klusons online. They're half the price of the Gotoh equivalent. (at least in my local store, that was the case)

It should be a simple drop in replacement, I assume the specs are the same.

I think your information about MIM hardware is waaaaayyyyyy outdated.

I have always found the split-post Klusons to be about the best tuners on Fender guitars,on my Kluson equipped Strats I can really man-handle the whammy bar vigorously and still keep in tune.I have 3 MIM Fenders and haven't encountered any tuning problems-or any others for that matter- with any of them, the QC problems with the MIM Fenders took place in the mid 90s but ever since around 2000 and beyond the quality in MIM Fender materials and workmanship has been as good as that of any of the guitar makers.

Just a couple of weeks ago I wrote a rather lengthy post about how the old QC issue urban legend about MIM Fenders refuses to die.I imagine that the vast majority of players who have bought post 2000 MIM Fenders have had trouble free performance from them and I have found that MIM Fenders are as good or even better than competitive brands costing much more.As Snick stated the whole MIM Fenders being substandard issue is very outdated.

I agree that MIM tuners are now pretty good. The sticky nut and sticky string tree on the MIM models may make them a tad harder to tune, but the tuners aren't bad at all. I certainly have guitars with worse tuners.

Well, according the the experts here, what you're experiencing only exists in your mind, Bro.
Since your tuners are as good as the one's on a high end American or Custom Shop Tele, no need to upgrade your hardware. Just be happy with the awesome tuners ya got ;)

No one has said anything of the sort. You're attacking a straw man here.
That X isn't bad doesn't imply a claim that X is as good as Y.

But beware that changing the machines can change the sound on the instrument - if nothing else because the weight on the headstock changes. Unless you have a six-string tree or a zeroth fret, the angle at the top of the nut will likely change too. Whether it's going to be an improvement or not is pretty much a crap shoot. It could be better, but you can't count on it.

Whoa, I don't know what thread your reading but it sure isn't his one. How in the heck did you come up with THAT conclusion?

K.. Attacking? You guys kidding or what?
This Cat comes on the Forum, posts this thread about his tuners, wants to upgrade them because, in a nutshell, they suck.
He gets two suggestions about upgrading to better tuners, Then the posts come in, which effectively invalidate his statement (based on his very own EXPERIENCE mind you...) with this argument about how much better the MIM hardware etc... is these days. Blah, blah etc... etc.. YET, he's sitting there with crap tuners on his MIM Tele.

Seriously, what's up w/ with you folks? Seems to me you got it backwards cause what you're saying to this guy is exactly what I stated. I just layed it out in black and white.
I don't hide, mince or mix my words. I'm a Straight Shooter. Don't like it, not my prob.

I'll tell you man, this place is just as bad as most Forums out there, full of Mal-Contents with nothing better to do than cause a whole lotta trouble.

There are some good folks on here, along with the Trolls. And you know who you are.
Say whatever you want about me. I don't hide behind the keyboard throwing $@!& at anyone. And sure not gonna take any either.

Re-read my post. No attacking here. Opposite, Bro.
And I'm off the thread. Later

I recognize that. I just wanted to be a mal-content.
