Well I'd prefer a Deluxe Reverb, but I am on a budget and am slowly taking my gear up the ladder, one step at a time :) I also don't want to drag along a 100W or 130W Twin Reverb Silverface (albeit 2 130Ws are on the market atm, going for 730 and 750€, while the 100W goes for 990€) as that would be an overkill. So the only real options I have are the BDRI or the HDRI, if I am looking for a Fender tube amp with 40-60W in this price range.

Should I also listen to it without any cables leading from the amp - or just leave the cable in the amp and plug it out of my guitar? I take it hum is normal, especially when the guitar is unplugged, as I crank it up? At least I know it's normal for SS amps, but as I said - I am a newbie when it comes to tubes :P

They would be the only Fender options. There's a lot of other great amps for reasonable coin out there. I would go Peavey Classic series before Fender's HRD series or Ampeg, Traynor, or Jet City. All reasonably priced, reliable, great sounding amps. I learned my lesson a while back about the HRD series.

The AMPEG GVT Series seem to be pretty good amps.

I guess like string, guitar, amp preference, speaker preference can be subjective too but to my ears Celestion speakers have more "punch" and better definition than Eminence. The fact that with the Eminence equipped Blues Jrs. a lot of people switch out the factory installed Eminence for Celestion Vintage 30s speaks volumes in itself.

Eminence OEM speakers are almost there to sell their better speakers for the more discerning. The OEM Eminence speaker in my SCX2 sounded very nice at moderate home room volume. Any attempt at cranking the volume showed the economy nature of the speaker.

I put a 10'' Red Fang alnico Eminence speaker in my amp and the difference is almost beyond words. Eminence offers a more robust speaker, (more wattage) in most instances compared to the equivalent Celestion. It is also made in the USA, a big plus for Americans looking for a quality domestic product to give money to.

As for the amps in question by the OP, I would go for the Celestion equipped amp. A regular brand named Celestion speaker is much better than an Eminence OEM speaker. The lower price and new tubes make the choice an obvious one for me.

Thanks, I think pretty much everyone agrees Celestion one is better :P Can't wait to try it out :D Hopefully it will be a good sounding and a reliable amp :)

63supro - yeah but I don't think I could ever part with Fender's clean sounds :P I mean, I do own a Gibson LP, beside a Fender Strat, and the Gibson brand is the only guitar brand I'd also own and use, beside Fender. As far as amps go - nothing I've tried so far comes even close to the sound of Fenders, at least for cleans. I tried out a ~1200€ priced 60W tube Marshall - good for distortion, as expected, but cleans are nowhere near Fender's. And I think we can all agree Ibanez sucks :P Would definitely try out a Hi-watt, but it's quite far out of my budget so not much point in trying out something only to drool due to wanting it :P And even if I could have it, I'd still want a Fender amp as well

I just went through this experience last night with a Marshall MG 50.

I was trying to decide on which amp to give to my niece for Christmas. She's a beginner, and I wanted her to start with something somewhat descent. A while back, I swapped the OEM Eminence with a Vintage 30. But I hadn't played through that amp in a few years. When I did last night, I thought "my God, exactly why did I buy this amp?" It just wasn't happening. But, it was either that amp, or my fender 85. Problem is, my 85 doesn't have a headphone out. And my sister will kill someone if she has to go through living with another beginner guitar player again.

So I decided on the Marshall, but I wanted to put the Eminence back in it. The V-30 sounds great in my JC. After making the swap, the Marshall sounded 10-times better. Now I remember why I bought that amp.

I know it doesn't quite help you with your fender question, but I would say that just because something is more expensive or highly regarded, it doesn't always mean it's a good fit for all amps and their voicing. In this particular case, it seems the Eminence is what Marshall intended for this amp. The V-30 really screwed with the eq and voicing of it.

On another note, I'm not really understanding why someone would put a 12ay7 in V-1. That's a pretty big drop. I can see trying a 5751 or 12at7, but I personally wouldn't go lower than that. Usually people do that to gain headroom. But needing more headroom out of a Fender isn't an issue I've heard of very often. If you opt for that amp, you might consider putting a 12ax7 or at7 to see the differences.

I see your point and it does make sense :) But like someone said already, and I have read that on other reviews as well, the speaker is one of the things that is replaced in these amps very often. So it does make me think that the Eminence might not be suited the best for this amp. Of course I could also be wrong :)

Well I don't really know much about tubes..yet :P He said he will give the original tube with it as well and that he changed it so he could get more volume control. So if that specific tube is a problem I could replace it with the stock one - well get someone to replace it, hopefully free of charge  But I do have to learn a lot more about tubes before I do something like that :P
