On this Forum people have sometimes complained about the ticket prices top line acts are asking these days for their arena and stadium shows. There was a big fuss about the most recent Stones tour prices, for instance. I'm right with those who thought it was insane and stayed away.

But all of that is nuttin'!

This morning tickets went on sale for Monty Python's one-off reunion show at the O2 Arena here in London, and all 20,000 seats were sold out in 43 seconds flat. I was standing by at my preferred ticket agency's site - and was delighted not to win tickets. Turned out they wanted £650 / $1052 each for block A seats!!! Front row of the raked side seats were £350 / $566 a pop.

I suddenly found I didn't need to be present to see a bunch of old men re-doing some overly familiar sketches. I don't care how much their alimony payments are, I don't want to help.

At prices like that the last laugh belongs to those who don't go.

What's the most folks here are prepared to pay for show tickets these days?

Cheers - C

I would be willing to spend up to 50.00 a ticket, depending on the act. by the time you add the other expenses involved (high priced parking, etc.) I don't think it is worth it.

my daughter gave us tickets to a college football game a few months ago. parking nearby at the high school was 50.00! we paid 20 bucks, and parked a mile away.

the only way for prices to drop would be if people stopped going. see the above post, and it doesn't look like that is going to happen

Hi Ceri

I heard that about the monty python show this morning as well, crazy. I must admit i dont even try for shows like that anymore, zeppelin are my oldest fave band and i didnt even bother for their reunion either, just silly amounts of money to keep these pensioners living comfortably.... Actually when i put it like that it seems almost noble, who am i to deny jimmy page his 84th gibson les paul? Or some gold trim for his 2nd swimming pool? .... i digress.

I see 3 levels of gigs and will happily pay the following

amateur - £5 to £10 max, though if im charged more than £5 or £6 i darn well expect to see a decent show with some effort put in, rarely happens.

Standard (ie. band that has recieved some airplay) - £10 to £20.

Veru Successful Group/Performer - £40 and above.

Now to me, the £40 guide for an established big act shouldnt have to be smashed that often, be it muse, jose gonzales or the stones.

For a monty python reunion? I think they could line everyones pockets and achieve their goals for £100 a ticket. I wouldnt pay that, but i could understand it. £350 to £650!?!? Good grief.

Olly

That tells me that most of them went to ticket sharks. This has become a big problem.

With a warm-up band, a B venue and an A venue, I'd say around $80. $100 if it's a top choice. Perhaps $120 if both bands are ones I would go out of my way to experience.
I may spend a similar amount or more on merchandise - if and only if the sellers are accredited.

If it's a festival, no more than $80 per day, cause a lot more money will be spent on overpriced parking, concessions and merchandise.

Once upon a time, some festivals had something called "festival money". Anyone remember that? You paid a pretty high fee to get in, but received a good portion of it back in "festival money" you could use to buy stuff with, with the same value as legal tender. The vendors would get reimbursed for any scrip they accepted. Sales were much brisker, because everyone wanted to use up (or sell) all their scrip before the end. And vendors would have less true cash and be less of a target for theft.
That was the days before color photo copiers, of course.

That's the school teaching children the value of greed and that price gouging is good.

I think it should be up to anyone arranging a venue to ensure there is ample affordable parking. If they can't, they've already failed. There are plenty of people who cannot walk for a mile, but can walk for 100 yards, and thus don't qualify for a handicap permit. Telling them that they need to pay $50 for private parking or go home is a slap in the face, and a fail on the side of the arranger.

Yep, sounds reasonable, I'd say.

Ah-ha. Now, I'm going to admit that about a decade ago I paid a three digit sum each for tickets to a Rolling Stones gig. As usual, it was billed as positively, absolutely their last ever, ever farewell tour. Obviously, nobody believes that when they hear it - when he's dead in his box Mick will still be doing farewell shows. But I'd never seen them live and it seemed like the moment. (Twickenham Stadium, this was, Olly.)

Thing is, it was one of the worst gigs I've ever seen in my life - and I'm not the first to say that about a Stones show. So then I felt like a total sucker for contributing to the let's-help-make-Mick-Jagger-even-richer fund. Simply not good value for money.

Nowadays I won't go above two figures for anyone. Front block tickets for The Who this summer were £75 / $120. Seemed about right.

If Elvis comes back to life and announces one more show maybe I'll run to 150. Maybe.

What's the most people will admit to having paid for a single gig? :)

Cheers - C

I'd maybe pay that kind of money if the act in question was terminal and there'd never be another opportunity.

I prefer Not the Nine O'Clock News anyway.

I've paid $150 per ticket, on a couple of occasions. Eagles and McCartney come to mind. I have to say that the McCartney show was one of the best I've ever been to. The quality of the performance, sound and video show was top notch the whole night. I walked out feeling like I had just been shown a top quality production by real pros.

I think with digital downloads and Apps like Pandora, Slacker, iTunes Radio.... the money has virtually evaporated from record sales so they have to jack up ticket prices to generate revenue. That being said I'll only pay what I feel the act is worth, beyond that the seat they rely on me to fill remains empty

In 1999, I paid $100 per ticket for Lady Armadillo and I to see Jonny Lang at Bass Hall in Fort Worth...the high price was for the ambience of the venue as much as it was the show; fortunately the show was very good, and I walked away a bigger fan than I was before the show.

Strangely enough, about nine years later, Lady Armadillo, the (then-seven-years-old) Armadillo Child and I happened upon a free Jonny Lang show at the Main Street Arts Festival in Fort Worth; we walked away after three muddy, self-indulgent and poorly performed songs. The boy lost something in those nine years, and I was sorely disappointed.

I paid $70/each to see the Stones during the Voodoo Lounge Tour. It was a good show, but nothing I've seen or heard on video/audio since then has tempted me to go see them again (and pay the ridiculous gouge fees)...

Haha - too rich for my blood, Orville! :D

'Zactly - to me that's the key to this thing.

I'm not much fussed about the "morality" of ticket prices. It comes down to value-for-money. If you pay a lot and get a lot back, then it's fine. But if not... (Huh, Mick Jagger?)

For sure, we all draw those lines in different places.

Cheers - C

Imo, no ticket should cost more than a major league baseball game seat.

I recently paid close to $100 to see the Tedeschi Trucks Band. Well worth the money. The band currently has 11 members, each of which are world class in what instruments they play. They really melted my heart, and Derek Trucks played slide like noone can imagine.
