...to being self employed. An anonymous donor has given me the 1200 dollars to buy the welder I've been wanting for several years now...picking it up this afternoon. I already have 3 small projects lined up , and I'm putting ads up locally to find more. At the same time, I'm going back to a welding shop job after 3 months of taking it easy doing this "merchandising" thing... the money will be great, but the hours will be long..and cold, especially right now. And I'll be doing a little travelling... but again, the money will be crazy.. so in a couple of months I should be in a lot better shape...and of course we all know that means there's some new gear in my future :) Wish me luck. things are about to get a lot better.

Good luck - self employment can be rewarding!

Oh you're in Nashville - - what are you hearing about
that Wayne Mills shooting/killing incident at a club down there...lots of rumors about how it happened...

Good luck to you and keep an eye on the paperwork, if you don't keep on top of it it can be like a runaway train.

I don't mean to shed gloom on your project but I've seen so many businesses going bust because they didn't know how much they owed and how much they were earning.

Taking a bit of time to keep your paperwork well organised will stand you in good stead.

Work well, stay well, and prosper.

Thanks for the kind words, everyone. For now, I'm just taking side gigs while I continue to work for someone else... But this is a huge step forward. I've been welding for 8 years now, except for the last 3 months I took a non-welding job so I could relax my back for a while after an injury...
about Wayne Mills, I haven't heard anything that's not in the news. Didn't know him , and as far as I know none of the guys I know that play downtown all the time really knew him... or at least none of them have commented on it on facebook.
but, from what I've heard it does sound ...very suspect. I don't buy the self-defense claim. I mean...if a musician is smoking in your establishment, why go start an argument with him yourself in the first place? If he doesn't listen, have security escort him out, maybe? I dunno. the phrase "that escalated quickly" comes to mind. I hope the truth comes out soon.

Thats cool! What kind of welder did you get? I have done some welding while on some rigging jobs but pretty much self learned on the job from others and just tinkering around. Father in law has a Miller Bobcat that I used for some people, in fact I just hoisted out of my truck. Used it at a farm helping put up Ham radio tower.

Kinda curious myself.

Just think of how awesome a guitar player you could have been by now if you had only spent the last 10 years practicing instead of obsessing over pickups and roasted maple necks.

Millermatic 211. It's an amazing machine. MVP plug so you can switch it between 2 plugs, one for 110, the other for 220 , runs gas or flux core, up to a ten lb roll of wire - and the unit itself only weighs about 75 lbs. I've gotta get a bottle of gas in the next few days, but for today I'm gonna go get a small roll of flux core wire and see how that goes. Never been a big fan of it, but it should be alright with something that welds as good as this. I used a 211 to modify a Gin rack from a liquor store - turned it into a podium for the Pastor of my church. How's that for upcycling? heh...

It sad to hear stories like that, and the bar owner was supposed to be his friend!
