Maple because it is smoother to play, especially the newer American maple necks, and because a one piece maple neck has better vibrations since it is one solid piece of wood, instead of two which could leave gaps, air pockets, ect. Also an all maple neck is just so distinctly Fender.

If it's made of wood, it's all good.

You get your necks without a truss rod and skunk stripe then, I take it? :D

Necks are a big area to cover as there are so many factors which affect an individuals playing.

A thought is that a lot of what we like in a neck hinges on past experience, ie guitars that you've played in your early days.

Personally I like a gloss finished neck and hear so many people saying things like "it's a really great guitar but I can't get on with the gloss finish on the back of the neck".

I don't think that is true, or there would be a lot more demand for U shaped two-by-four necks.
