I ask this question after reading a thread in the Telecaster group and it got me thinking.

I always like the feel of a rosewood neck but when I got a guitar with a laquer finished maple fretboard it belw me away. So I'm interested to haear what others have to say on the subject.

Though I love the feel of the laquer finished maple board, I fell I can move my fingers around on that board easier than any other, I still feel that the rosewood board is somehow warmer.

I like rosewood the best however I don't mind maple satin. It smoother than lacquer to me.

I'd have to go with ebony as my favorite fretboard. Maple is good, too..but usually sounds incomplete to my ears, as far as bass necks go. I've owned a bass with pau ferro, also. It had a crackle thing to it..kind of Rickenbacker-ish.

A real thick rosewood board sounds awesome...

I like fretboards! Do you like fretboards? I like fretboards, I think they're great.

I chose "rosewood" and "other" because I love the Brazilian rosewood that actually smells like roses, but not the Indian substitution used by Fender these days, which you have to oil quite often. The two are very different.

There's also Pao Ferro, which I'd love to try, but I believe that was only used on a single Fender guitar.

You know, I honestly don't know which. I've never really considered it until you posted this. I've thought more of the feel of the strings and the neck, itself. The majority of the instruments I have (I play bass more than anything, so this could be a contributing factor) are rosewood fretboards, but I have three instruments that are maple. Maybe, it just depends on the sound I want at the time? I don't think I could pick just one over the other, because of other variables involved.

You should have had a box there for "no preference" or "either one will do".I really couldn't care less what material or type of wood is used in the neck because as long as I don't get splinters from it being exceptionally rough, anything will do.I can say that doing 4 or 5 step bends on maple is marginally easier than on a rosewood one but not enough to make a profound difference. That would be the only thing that could possibly make a difference anyway other than esthetics.

I like the feel of rosewood and ebony --so rosewood or ebony.
My bass has a maple board--but as the strings are so thick I don't feel the board.

And yes, it makes a difference to how I play.

Interesting. I wonder how many bend with the strings pushed down on the fretboard, and how many push down less hard. I belong to the latter category.

Where I touch the fretboard the most on electrics is on the edges, both sides.
On acoustics, I may push the strings all the way down. But only when I don't bend.

Ebony is my favorite, closely followed by satin maple. Rosewood, which used to be my favorite, is still fine with me. None of them hamper my playing. It's just a feel good thing.
The only fb's I don't like are the maple with a heavy gloss finish that feels like plastic. One of those originally turned me off to maple until I played a satin finish maple and liked it.

Rosewood. Maple boards are cool but like the feel of Rosewood more. Tone difference?... marginal to say the least.

HA! That reminds me that I do, in fact, have at least two of each and many more to boot. Good call. 8)
