I never look at them. I do believe we have talked about them before. Someone mentioned something about some glow in the dark one for when there onstage because they couldn't see them.

That was me but we weren't talking about how much we rely on them or not. Rather we were talking about how visible they are on rosewood vs maple. I just found that thread. It looks like the OP must have been a bad boy around here. Seems his membership no longer exists.

I look at them to start a song, but after that I may or may not look at them--it depends how well I know the song, and how much I have to move around the neck.
But as I know my guitars and their necks I don't have to look a whole lot.

Matt, that is a guitarists situation on a par with keeping the B string in tune lol and so here's my 2 cents. While working the counter at the pawn shop on a Saturday in walks a customer about 25 y/o average height long hair goatee looking for an acoustic guitar I hand him one he sits down on an amp and begins to play. With him is a beautiful young woman "10" braids bette davis eyes and she is staring in wonderment at the pawnshop interior, guitars everywhere, on the walls on stands hanging from the ceiling, the owner John likes guitars lol. The customer asks about price and I call John who then comes out from behind the bulletproof glass and talks to the customer. The beautiful young woman looks at me and I ask her if she is a musician, she smiles and says "no but these guitars look cool". I pickup my black P-bass and hold it over the counter and say "put this on" she steps forward I put the strap on her shoulder and it fits, a little low but fits so now she looks like the white zombie bass player on a school day. She is moving her hand on the bass neck and says "why are these squares of black tape on the back of the neck?" I tell her that on a dark stage if I forget my hand position I can feel where I am. She gives a sly smile to me and starts to move her hand on the bass neck again mock playing. The customer said good bye to John the young woman gave back my guitar and they left. Hope that helps Matt. :D 8)

I'm not sure I'd say I rely on them, but I'd definitely rather they were there.

Don't notice or use them.

I don't use them at all. They're too small to be seen when I'm focusing on my left hand.

I don't need to focus on my right hand as much anymore. I feel like a have a good sense of rhythm.

Whether I look or not can depend on the neck's taper toward the headstock.

Yep, I notice them, but rarely use them as a visual reference...I prefer the fingerboard markers, if I'm going to be "visually" following the song (obviously a song I'm less familiar/comfortable with).

Does anybody remember the Danny Gatton Telecaster that had the cubic zirconia stones inlaid on the side feet makers?

Just played a classical acoustic with no sidemarkers or fretboard markers for that matter but while it was confusing at first, I quickly got used to it, going by feeling and sound rather than by sight. In fact it surprised me how quickly I adapted. I've always thought it must be hard for violinists with no frets at all, but now I'm not sure it's quite as hard as I imagined...

The neck dots I do notice are the guitarists, when I'm standing behind he/she. It's so much easier to follow the neck when you're in the back row.

Ex-fiddler here: It's not that hard on a violin, in part because the neck is short enough that you'll always be near enough to either the headstock or body to touch it, and in part because the neck widens towards the bridge, so there's always sensory feedback on how far up you are.

It's mostly muscle memory, to tell the truth. At smaller scale, so you learn quicker.
Now fretless bass is another story - I really admire the guys that play those well!

(And I still want a fretless Tele one day.)
