I know it's hard to imagine but I think I've stumbled onto a topic we've never discussed before. Feel free to correct me if I am wrong about that. I haven't seen it if we did. I got thinking about this while responding to a question posed by newbie dreamality.

How much do we rely on side markers for keeping track of our position on the neck?

I've heard (OK, read) some guys remarking that they don't even look at the side markers at all. I find that hard to swallow, particularly when you're between the 3rd and 10th frets. Discuss.

I do most of my recording in the near dark here, I don't foul up many takes by going to the wrong fret.

There's always these if you need them ...

I hardly ever look at them. Not all my guitars have them, either. And on Fenders, they're so tiny that old eyes can barely make them out anyhow.
if I need to start high up, I may glance before I start playing, but more often at the fretboard itself. With small radius fingerboards, I can usually see at least some of the markings.

I'm the same way in that I need them to get started but after that I am only partially conscious of them. Still, I know that I do use visual cues to help me find my way. It's not always the markers. Not so much if I am sticking to one area of the fretboard. If I am staying in one area I don't need to look down at all and can play by feel but if I start moving up or down the neck in increments greater than a couple of frets I know that even if I don't directly look at the markers I do still rely on visual cues to get to my new location. I know with certainty that I could not work my way down from the 15th fret to the 4th fret without ever looking even once. I don't even think I could make it from the 15th to the 9th without looking. It's not always the side markers I'm looking at but I do need to look. More often than I'd like.

I try to pay attention to where my left hand is . With most guitars , the side markers are quite small and are not very useful in low lighting levels , unless the fretboard has white binding or the neck is maple.

when i first started playing they were a necessity, but now after almost 30 years i find i don't look at the fret board as much as i used to. i still think they're good to have on the neck.

I primarily look at the fret markers on the fretboard. Rarely look at the side dots. For whatever reason, looking at the markers on the fretboard works better for me.

I really honestly never look at those markers, but I definitely glance at the dots on the frets from time to time. Either that or it's so subconscious that I forget I'm doing it.

The ones you'd see if you ever let go of your vanity long enough to see an optometrist.

I never look at them. I do believe we have talked about them before. Someone mentioned something about some glow in the dark one for when there onstage because they couldn't see them.

I glance at them all the time when I'm playing.... I've yet to trust myself enough NOT to. maybe someday.

I don't overly rely on them but I do use them as a reference point in songs where I have to go from the first 3 frets to above the 12th in an instant such as in "Voodoo Child (slight return)" and "Foxy Lady".I'm in awe of a lot of classical guunderside of the neckitarists who can go from the top to the bottom of the neck in an instant with no fret references at all and never hit an off note.

BTW: When I flipped both of my lefty Strats for doing Hendrix stuff I had to put side markers on both of them with a fine point permanent marker because what was once the underside of the neck, was now topside.
