So...started going to this new church a few months back..and my family and I love it, the people are awesome, we all have the same views , etc... tonight we had a little get together , just the guys watching the game. the pastor was there. I was kind of messing around with a guitar that belongs to the host's son, and the pastor is all "oh...you can play?" and i'm like "well, i do alright... " and that somehow turned into him telling me to show up for practice tomorrow because they need a bass player. I might have kind of agreed , but made sure I said I "make no promises" .... never played in front of people before... oh, crap. lol. guess I'll go see how practice feels and go from there. wish me luck. :/

I ended up in the same situation at work for a holiday "company band" situation. Don't over think it like I did and just enjoy yourself.

am I the only one who finds it obnoxious that these things are just expected of you, as if they are entitled to you because you go to the same church? :?

It's not the 'asking', it's the assumption, like you're an employee or something. You don't tell me to show up for practice, you ask if I can make it and if I'm interested. That kind of thing just makes me want to give an automatic 'NO'.

But.... if you have the free time and you're into it, then good stuff, enjoy! :D

If you don't wanna play then don't play. Don't let a pastor coerce you or push you around. If it were me I would see this as a good test of whether or not you should stay there and call it home. If you decline and he can't take no for an answer and respect a man's decision then maybe it's time to go shopping for a better church. You will find good people as well as flakes in any church you go to so it's not like this one is irreplaceable. The individuals in any church body will all have their own quirks but the overall good stuff and overall bad crap that goes on church-wide all come from the same place, the pastor or the board or sometimes both. This is an opportunity for you to see what's what.

My two cents.

Just think of how awesome a guitar player you could have been by now if you had only spent the last 10 years practicing instead of obsessing over pickups and roasted maple necks.

haha... oh, it's not like he's some seriously pushy guy. I have kinda secretly wanted to maybe try my hand at this spot, knowing how badly they need a bass player...but I'm too shy and timid to throw myself out there. I didn't make it to practice tonight, but I'm going to next week. I was back at the same house tonight doing a little welding repair job. The guy who owns the house let me borrow his bass to see how it feels. It's been a long time, more than 10 years since I played bass. Feels good, though. I think I'm into it. Going to look up some of the tunes they play and see what I can do. Thanks for the good wishes :)

Hi Dan
I play on a worship team myself. Been doing it for over 10 years now. Its being fun and alot of work, and a big commintment. Do it for the right reasons and a church you feel at home at. Its a blessing, and I've been blessed for doing it.
Remember the scripture about master and his servants. Dont bury your tallents....

Look at it this way. If you don't do well, you can all pray that you will get better.

Go for it.

I prefer guitar, but I like bass too.

Enjoy!

well, went to the first practice last night... it went...decent, given the fact that i never learned anything the right way ...
I started on bass back in high school and quickly switched to guitar, my friend showed me how to read tabs and then i've kinda done my own thing for ,oh...12 years or so now... never learned any theory, or really anything. I have an idea of how a few chords are to be played but never use them.....
anyway, the songs they had told me to learn were impossible to find bass tabs for. all i could find was a list of chords for them..which was kinda useless to me. I called them and told them this but they assured me it'd be fine, just show up and we'll figure it out. so i was sweating bullets for the first 10 minutes or so, trying to get a groove going while they were just jamming for a few minutes... then we started a song, they're all really comfortable with it, played it a few times already... the guitarist guy showed me a couple of things, told me what to play, and the first song went pretty well..the other two ...not so much, but they were in kind of a hurry and needed to get through it themselves. no pressure , though. they told me i could sit in at practice as many times as I need to before i play live with them. and now i've got an idea of what they're looking for...so i'll be doing my homework. but, all in all it was great for me to finally get over that fear of playing with people who are way better than me. thanks for all the kind words. hopefully i'll be playing live in a few weeks.
