Seems to me neither. He seems to step to the tune of a different drummer, and has enumerated what he deems 'uncool' in those venues. As I have already stated, first thing in the morning on a weekday is the best time to interact with your favorite gear there, and you might just get to share thoughts with a fellow player with the same mindset as you. Besides...you won't have to concern yourself with violators of the signs that read : "Puleeze...No Smoke, No Stairway, No Sweet Child, No Sandman, No more!!"

It's all good, I just thought it was obvious that I wasn't talking about any of those types of people as cool, and I'd agree on the list that he put there!

On the songs you shouldn't play issue I always get a little worried when I test stuff as to what I play, I like to play something I'm really comfortable with, which often tend to be those covers you've known how to play for years, but don't want to be that guy blasting out cliche songs

I'd say that was a good day Snowjoe 8). As for the No Stairway, No Smoke signs, I'd love to walk into some store with them hanging, pull out a wad and as someone runs over to "can I give you a hand there sir" point to the sign and say "Erm it doesn't appear so" and walk out. I remember starting to learn to play, went to this guitar shop lifted a book, 101 songs made easy for guitar that sort of thing and went to pay for it, while in the queue the guy behind me mutters as I'm paying " If you need a book like that you shouldn't be playing guitar guffaw guffaw guffaw", being a kid at the time I turned bright red and left with book under my arm wondering if he was right, It's prats like that who make going into guitar shops uncomfortable for some, I think it would be nice if some kid was playing Smoke the wrong way to maybe say try it this way and not look down their noses at them, just my tuppence worth

I think you're on the money there, it can be very easy to forget that once upon a time that kid in the line buying the book was you. Another thing people forget, which I learned when I was teaching snowboarding at a very high level, is that no matter how new to something someone is, and how good you are yourself, that beginner might just have a little something that you can learn from them.

As for smoke on the water and that kind of song, what better way to make a kid feel like an absolute rock star than being able to blast out those power chords in the riff. Might just be the confidence booster they need to really get going with the guitar.

I'd be more than happy to buy only at mom and pop shop...but most of 'em don't have a Fender dealership, or the selection and discounts of the big chains. I always buy used stuff anyhow, though.

.......those are same 'dorks' who walk by the storefront of a martial arts school and make all kinds of stupid, dumbass, grunting and hooting noises. The same dorks who make the sad mistake of picking on the wrong person, at the wrong time, in the wrong place, because they never learned the face of the black belt who was standing at the front door watching them as they walked by. In any event, one ultimately learns the ways of inner peace and confidence on one's self, be it guitars or any other pursuit in life.

My take on that is "Oh, you're a Ritchie Blackmore fan?" Wait for the inevitable nod or "yeah", then say "Me too, here's one from his latest", grab the baddest heavy axe you see and start playing:

Yes, Doc, i step to the tune of a different drummer :-)
