I just took a set of humbuckers and installed them into my Esprit which is a Les Paul type setup. I wired it up just like a Les Paul Standard. Everything sounds fine until I switch to the middle position. The sound is thin with both volume knobs at 10. But if I back off one or the other, the sound gets full again, but takes away Bass or treble along with it (depending on if I back off the bridge or neck volume knob).

I'm just wondering why this is happening. This weird blending thing is annoying. I just want both pickups together at full volume in the middle. Any suggestions are much appreciated.

It sounds like one of the pups is wired out of phase, reverse polarity to the other pup.

So would that mean that I'd have to ditch 2-pots and just go with one volume and one tone? The pickups only have 1-hot and 1-ground.

The only other guitar I've had them in was setup that way.

Try switching the hot and ground on one pup.

Better still add a DPDT micro switch wired to reverse phase 1 of the pickups (neck)* - a' la Peter Green (almost , his was allegedly reversed magnetic poles with neck pickup fitted backwards! ).

*I modded a 355 copy that way for more tone options.

My LP has the Peter Green mod and does exactly as you described. I can get out of phase at any volume level in the center position if each knob is set to the same level. I can go back into phase by lowering or raising either knob. Mine has the neck magnet reversed. The OOP sound is thin, but it comes in handy once in a while.

+1 on the out of phase pickup wiring. i have my l.p. wired like that. leave it and freak out your friends. also listen to peter green and original fleetwood mac(not the pop crap they morphed into when peter quit). it will really challenge your playing dynamics.

I haven't really messed with it yet since I wrote this. I would have had no problems with the blend part except for one issue. The way it is now, you can't get the full sound of both pickups together at any turn of just one knob. And that's my favorite sound. In order to get both sounds fully together the way it is now (both vols. at 5), the volume level is cut to 5 overall along with it. And of course, there goes the treble. If it was a tone blend type thing, then cool. But it's not. It's a volume issue.

I'm actually going to swap the neck pickup with one that has 4 conductor wiring anyway. This one is a little strong in the Esprit. I'm going with a lower output Giovanni. With the chambered body of an Esprit, it doesn't take much for neck pickups to get boomy. But with the right output, it gets a very nice rich flavor. These are seriously the best guitars Squier ever made.

yeh, it's a volume thing not a tone. if one pickup is just slightly louder than the other you wont have the out of phase sound. as the volume of one pup is brought to almost equal no matter if you are raising or lowering the volume of one of the pups you will begin to hear the out of phase sound. the tone still acts like a tone. it's an intresting sound.

The pickups are humbuckers that came out of a Roland G-707 synth guitar. If anyone ever gets a chance to snag some pickups from one, I highly recommend it. They are extremely clean and clear. They kinda had to be for that kind of instrument.
