Which ways work best for you guys when playing live?

We tried going through the board last night and got a
pretty decent sound although we had to boost the vocals
afterwards on the remix.

Hope this link works:

Sounds good Mike. Through the soundboard usually gets the best results IMHO YMMV (to quote my favorite Martian) :D

That was a good live recording Mike. The band sounds good. The vocals were clear. The guitar sounded good on the solo but a little too distorted during the verses for me. It needed a little more definition, but that's just my opinion and I know what that's worth. Good job. Let's hear some more.

Thanks guys, I agree Drew, the stage sound often is much different at the FOH - - and it shows when recorded through the board.

This is a slower R&B tune: (no distortion) and better dynamics.

Hey Mike, thanks for posting your songs. So far I've only listened to the Badfinger one. I thought the execution of the song was excellent but I'm sure you already know that. As for your recording I have to say it's damned good for a live recording. I've heard many good selling live recordings by popular artists that were not as good, particularly stuff from years back. I'm sure you know exactly what I'm talking about and one or two of those comes to your mind even now.

There's always room for improvement though, right? And I suspect that's why you're posting these links? Looking for a critical analysis?

Two things I noticed:
1) there is just a hint of the beginnings of white noise developing in the very high trebles, possibly from just a tad too much input level but could be from the source as well. It's not very much for sure. I trained myself to listen for it some years back so I sometimes notice it when others don't.
2) The bass guitar seems distant somehow. It's clearly a little bit muddy for my own personal taste. I think most folks on the board have surmised by now that I like my bass guitar tone much more pristine and clear than most people do. That's not what I'm talking about, though. It's a tad muddy but there's this other thing I can't quite put my finger on. Could be mic placement. Or if a DI was used straight out of the guitar or amplifier pre-amp then there must be some other issue. It sounds …. I dunno .… distant. Not a timing issue cuz that's fine. Just seems like the bass was the only instrument recorded differently somehow. Almost like it was recorded separately with lesser quality equipment and then dubbed over.
Thinking ….. nope. Still can't quite put my finger on it. Maybe it's just me.

I hope nit-picks were what you were looking for. If not, oops! Sorry bro!

A couple of really nice plusses I noticed: the overall mix is really good. Actually it's better than good, it's damn near perfect and I especially liked the stereo separation. Very natural sounding and also professional sounding as well. Good job there.

You know we're all gear pigs here so you best fess up and give us all the info on how you recorded this and with what equipment.

Just listened to the second one. Much nicer. Both of the issues are gone and like you said, better dynamics as well. Excellent execution as well. In fact it's good enough I'm downloading it to add to my iTunes. Will include it in one of my playlists. What's the name of your band? I want to fill in the info for the iTunes listing and maybe find a pic to attach to it.

Thanks Beemer, you're too kind.

An old friend who is a sound engineer (kinda big time) was available and we persuaded him to bring his rig and run the FOH soundboard.

The first song was all mic'd amps, drums and 2 mains were split with a direct feed to the board.

The second tune was by using all DI boxes (except the drums) and was tweaked much more with High Pass and Low Pass filters.

Lastly the mixes were all tweaked again with Pro Tools, but no pitch correction was used anywhere.

Using a splitter with a junction box (DI) gives a much different stage sound vs what the board is picking up. That's why I was asking how others have done live gig recordings.

Myself, I prefer the all mic'd method, but with these 2 examples, it appears that the DI boxes had a better overall result. I hate DI boxes and made no attempt to hide my feelings about using them...but now, I'm not so sure. :?

That's the way to do it Mike. Seriously, I was waiting to see if there was going to be any crowd noise at the end because I was doubting that that was a live recording. Nice job.
With the first song you posted, the guitar sounded great at the intro and was fine for a live performance during the verses, I just thought distortion muddied up the recording a bit during the verses. Sound like you're having fun. When's the tour start?
