so, my family has this tradition of doing gag gifts instead of real gifts, but the rule is it has to be funny yet practical. of course there are always some suckers that bring a nice gift or two, and that makes it more entertaining because not only do we do gag gifts, but also do them with a "dirty santa" kinda thing, you know...where you all draw numbers out of a hat and pick gifts off the table in order, and number 2 can take number 1's or pick a new one...so on and so on.... anyway, this year I'm having trouble coming up with something.. thought I'd see if you all had any good ideas :) I like the way your minds work. thanks in advance.

One year, I got a plastic tie drier. All you need is to drill a hole in the ceiling, screw it in, and it can drip dry eight of your ties at a time. Most practical gift ever...

What's a tie, by the way?

The most unique but nearly useless Christmas gag gift I ever got was a little tree about 15 inches high, carefully stripped of all leaves. It was mounted to a little stand. Hanging in the tree on a black thread is a lone 9MM Luger bullet.

The receiver has to guess what it is.

The only correct answer of course is, "A Cartridge In A Bare Tree."

Generated big chuckles. But unless you have a 9MM pistol it is pretty useless. Fortunately I just happen have one.

I had one of those, never used it from the ceiling, but I had a closet it hung in.

Back when I wore ties.

I know I didn't buy it, so it must have been a gift.

If you go to the http://thewirelesscatalogue.com or http://www.cafepress.com websites you should find something suitable as a gag. These sites have some great and very tacky stuff that may fit the bill perfectly.

some of my best : a plastic light-up cow (for a nativity scene) all by itself. the great thing is, my Aunt who ended up with it still puts it out all by itself every Christmas. it's her "Christmas Cow" ha...
one year I got a picture of some senator at goodwill...it was signed, made out to some girl. I thought it was just weird enough to make everyone laugh pretty good. man was I right. it keeps showing up every year... whoever ends up with it always brings it back. One year I got it and blew it up poster size at Kinko's....that was hilarious. now the poster is a permanent Christmas decoration at my grandmother's house. lol.
and then a couple of years back I got a can of paint stripper that simply read "STRIPPER" in big bold letters...and put a pair of fishnet stockings over the can. that was probably my best one yet. lol.

If you think a pillow is too creepy, you could be more traditional.

Like, you know, a marzipan pig:

Or a set of nice earrings:
