USED AMP DAY

Circa 1983 100 Watt Marshall JCM 800 2203. Six knobs. Master volume. Vertical inputs. Celestion G12-65s.

Bought it from a guy who's had it since 1990. He never replaced the tubes so it's probably going to need a little work but it can sure roar. Need to play with the combination of Master Volume and Preamp to get the distortion sound I want but even with the Preamp knob clicked off, it has some good muscle too it, just really good natural overdrive.

The neighbors are going to be bummed and the wife is going to be pissed when she finds out how much I paid for it but I saved for it on my own fair and square, and it's going to take up a little real estate in the garage. But when I set her loose she's going to sing!

Tolex is a little thrashed on the back. I was thinking about replacing it but my buddy says it's worth more with the original tolex on there, plus it looks punk! I might just end up super glueing down the loose pieces.

Let there be rock!

Wow,congrats on getting the 2203,these puppies are brutal on the ears when they are opened up to their full potential.I have a 1983 JCM 800 2204 model which is the master volume 50W-almost a lower powered equivalent of yours, and that little brute can blister wallpaper and rattle windows. The beauty of the 2203 is that you can keep the volume somewhat more tame than you can on the non master volume 100W Marshalls such as the 1959. Crank the Volume and just barely engage the Master Volume and you'll get a classic Marshall roar at a somewhat more civilized volume rather than a full force assault on the eardrums that would blow out your Eustachian tubes if a 1959 was used instead The G-12-T-65s are great speakers and can take the pounding that a 2203 will give them, anyway enjoy your new amp and I hope that you get the reliability out of yours that I've gotten from my babies for the past 20 years.

I never cease to be amazed at the kind of physical damage these items display. Knocked around like that, it's a wonder the innards are still working. Either handle with care or put the gear in road cases if the only hands which more the stuff are attached to the ends of the arms of gorillas. Respecting the tools of one's trade is rule number one IMHO.

True, but easier said than done in some instances (i.e. moving gear at 3am in sizzling heat & humidity after a long gig and the stairs down to where the truck is parked are missing some steps but you don't notice with no lights back there).

I hear you, but the damage to the skin of that Marshall is unacceptable. You don't treat gear that way.

Good advice. I'll definitely be trying that when I've got the house to myself and most of the neighbors are at work. Still a little gun shy of cranking it to its full potential and going to need to clear out the garage to give me enough room to work...

The guy I bought it from says it was like that when he bought it around 1990. Whether that's true or not, the fact that the tolex is so shredded basically meant I got the amp and the cab for the going price of just the amp alone. So being as I only had enough money for the amp and I was planning on running it through my HRDlx as a cab, I figure I got a pretty good deal because the tolex was shredded, not to mention 4 good sounding Celestions.

So now my plan is to super glue the tolex as best I can, especially on the front to keep it from ripping more and go from there. Didn't take any photos of the bottom of the cab but it's ripped even worse down there so any advice on how to mitigate it is much appreciated!

I wouldn't worry about depreciating the value of the amp by retolexing it. I think you'd be doing the amp justice by returning it to it's original, or put whatever style or color tolex you like. I like my gear to look as great as it sounds. I'm not at all into the "relic" fad that seems to have taken over guitarists gear. I would turn that amp and cab into a project.
