Over the past few days I've been able to try a couple of comparisons which turned up some surprising results.

Experiment #1
After buying my Schecter Semi-hollowbody, that gave me two guitars with Phat cats in them. My Squier Esprit still has a pair in it from trying out a set earlier. I never got around to putting buckers back in it.
One guitar is a semi-hollow maple body, ebony fretboard, stock Korean mini pots with poly caps. The other is a chambered mahogany body, rosewood fretboard, Gibson full sized pots with Orange Drop caps.

So what differences did I hear between the 2-guitars? None.. They honestly sound exactly the same to me. I was waiting to hear some drastic differences. Anticipating it. And if there was any, I just couldn't hear it. I'll have to record the two to see if it captures certain differences. But through the amp live so far, they sound the same.

Experiment #2
A friend of mine has a Strat with Texas Special pickups and Orange Drop caps in it. I asked him to bring it over so I could hear it. I've been debating buying a Texas Special set for a few weeks. I plugged it in, we listened, and they do sound very nice.
Just to compare, I pulled out one of my Squier Affinitiy guitars with completely stock pickups and wiring.

The difference was mind-blowing to both of us. The output of the Squier was much higher. But more importantly, the sound was fuller, richer, and just more flavorful all around. I'm glad someone else was there to witness it so I just don't sound like a crazy person when I say that 2000 Indonesian Squier Affinity strats could quite possibly be the best sounding Strats Squier ever produced. Enough for me to say I don't need or want Texas Specials, and my Classic Vibe 60's sounds like a toy in comparison.

My next experiment will be to compare it to other U.S.A models and see how it stacks up. I have a '57 AVRI at my mom's house I'm dying to do a head to head with for starters. I already know the output will be different, I just want to compare the tone differences.

So there you go. Two very interesting experiments and observations so far this week.

We both use the same D'Addario 9's, but as far as the age, I couldn't tell you. I don't know when he last changed his. But they seemed fine. None of them were tarnished.
