Hello all, I was recently invited to jam with a local covers band. Not knowing what material they did I asked the singer what should I expect. He said "oh we do some Kings of leon and Stereophonics as well as some other stuff, you'll see". So, happy with the KOL and Phonics I went and jammed withi them at the singers garage/studio. We sstarted out doing `sex on fire` and `Dakota` which although was in a differnt key and A LOT slover than I'm used tho playing, it went well. Then came `right, lets do `Mustang Sally` said the singer. My head turned as if to say `your joking right`. sadly he wasn't. I'm not knocking the song but does anybody really need to hear another cover band doing it EVER again. Anyway I played my part and did my best to rock it up a little. Next came `Black magic woman` `wonderful tonight`, `dock of the bay` and `brown eyed girl`. Like I said not bad songs just not my cup of tea. At the end of the night the drummer said `Your in`. To which I replied `haaaaaa what?` I think somehow they thought I wanted to join them. Anyway I said lets just see how it goes. I really didn't want to be in a classic rock band. My intention is get a band doing covers of songs that don't get covered by 99% of other cover bands ot there. So a month later and 4 jam sessions later I sstill feel the asme abbout playing the songs mentioned but am I too deep in this thing? I decided this morning to let te band know I'm not really interested in doing the songs they want, so I think it'll be best if we part ways.

Has anyone else outhere got themselves into bands by accident or misunderstanding? Did you do the same as me and !@$ it in the bud before getting in to deep, or are you still in the band?

Mustang Sally is the jugs song. You play it, and there's a pretty good chance you'll see some jugs, especially if there's a Sally in the club.

if it was me, I would have walked out from the group sooner. It was a good decision. So don't overthink now.

Life is about compromise, there "are" more then just ourselves....
I don't like having to install generic cabinetry, laminated flooring etc... etc... I'd much rather just renovate and rebuild Victorians and Colonials with high grade materials.... Not every one wants or has the liquidity to pay for it....

That is the bottom line " Pay For It " if you are playing in any venue where patrons are paying either a cover charge and / or just drinks....
Play the covers, but play them with enthusiasm, by all means certainly add a bit of yourself, the point is to make the song live again.... Find other songs by the composer that don't get much airplay... Sweet was always known for " Fox On the Run " ..... Nazareth for " Love Hurts " but as an example both of those bands had other songs well within the cover listing...
If you can also interject a few originals throughout the night ... Do So .... But only if you know your audience... You must tailor the music to the audience ... That is the Paying Audience....

I'm all for playing my own music, but if you get a blank stare instead of a smile .... Then as a musician, you have lost your most important component...
It's a social factor, music is best when shared with other's ..... 8)

We play both covers and original songs (we've recorded 6 of them so far - well the vocals are being recorded now for 4 of them; we plan to do a couple more in summer and hopefully get our first album out by the end of the year - and everyone, except me, is 16, I'm 20) and not all of us like all of the cover songs. Well at least not the original versions, anyway. Take Rolling In The Deep for example. I dislike the song a lot. We played it before we added a 2nd guitarist and changed the singer and lost the bassist, but the song still stuck. I said I'd play bass on this song because I didn't want to play song that I disliked that much on a guitar. Anyway, this is our version of the song:

If you listened to the music only, if there were no vocals, you wouldn't recognize which song it is. No way. Suddenly I have fun playing a cover of a song I dislike. As for the audience? As soon as we play the song and they hear the first couple of words they start singing along and have a good time. People mostly only know the lyrics anyway. Play in a different key and they won't notice it (well 95% of them won't anyway). Change how you play it, but keep the vocal lines the roughly the same, and they'll like it as well.
We normally do a set that consists of cover songs (we add some of our own things into pretty much every one of those, but you might still find a cover we do almost note-by-note) and original songs. If we have are playing on an event that has many, many entertainers and thus each one gets just 10 mins or so, and see that the public probably doesn't know our own songs, we'll just play 2 or 3 covers we know they know and like. If someone likes you, they'll check you out. If you play something they don't know, they won't even listen you long enough to hear whether they like you (at least the majority).

Just my 2c anyway.
