One thing not discussed in all of this is geography.

Me, I'm in central WI, there's really only about 4 bars around here that hire live music. So on a given night we'll have a crowd ranging from 21-61. So some of those standards are necessary to keep the crowd. You can vary off that path as long as you can keep some interest in the dance floor, if the ladies don't want to dance, then they don't want to stay and the bar sells no drinks, no return gigs. That's how it works.

If you get up there and play an hour full of obscure Jethro Tull and originals because you like them I can guarantee you won't get rehired.

Now when I'm down by Milwaukee visiting my cousin and we go out, we can go to 5 different bars and see a wide variety of bands. There's a lot more places to play, and with some colleges around there's more desire for the variety.

Oh well, just a thought. I'm having fun so no worries either way.

Im in Kansas City MO and Ks we have tons of venues here and its behind the times redneck.
So yeah 70s rock goes over great here so does modern.
A lot of Joe Dirts here and that's an awesome thing for Rock N Roll bands.

We get a crowd from 100 to 500 in bars and we play amphitheaters here to like 2000 people in the summer.

I beg to differ, I would call it a compromise. Just because I may not like a particular song on our list doesn't mean I won't play it, and I don't think I'm selling out. I understand that there are three other members in our band and it would be selfish of me to dump on it just because I don't like it. One or two song that I don't agree with are not going to spoil the fun I have playing for friends, family, charitable events, etc.

Our band has been together for over five years and I credit that to
1.making group decisions
2.consideration of everyone's taste
3.consideration of our limitations
4.consideration of the audience

It's been said before, probably 80% of the audience just wants to hear music they can relate to, dance to, or grew up listening to. For me, I could honestly give a rats ahss what song were playing if the audience is enjoying themselves. That's and just playing guitar is what makes me happy.

I guess the bottom line is, there is a place for every musician, and no one knows their place better than us. We just have to find it. :D

I reunited with a cover band I was in some years ago for a Benefit this past September..

We were not two songs into our set, I had three people walk up to me and ask if we knew Mustang Sally (Of course, who doesn't?) the next request was Some kind of Wonderful. Go figure? So we did them, (not like we didn't know them,..)

There was two other bands playing that night, and they were both very good. One was all originals the other band was doing stuff that people just were not relating to.

We mixed it up, but most of the songs (Classic Rock) had "mass appeal", stuff that we KNEW (based on 25/30 years of gigging experience) folks were going to get up and dance to.

As a result, we had the dance floor packed for the entire 1hr and 20 minute set, the other bands, ...dance floor empty...

Decide where you want to go as a band.

If it's to be out gigigng in the bar rooms, and private functions, you gotta know what works and what doesn't. IMO most these songs, you should never need to beat to death, but what is the harm in having a dozen or so of them in your set list to toss out when you need them? Most of these are all quick kills, you can learn a bunch of them in just a few hours, and the tuck them away until you need em.

Bottom line is, when your job as a bar band is to get a room full of people up and having a good time, proud mary wins out over bohemian rhapsody everyday. Don't forget, as a band,,, we're supposed to be entertaining them, not ourselves.

I'm not nutz about these tunes either, but I'm in a cover band, the mission is simple. Get em off their asses and on the dance floor.

it's pretty awesome that they liked you but you're still an individual who have your own preferences. It was the right things. It should always be doing what you love first

That pretty much covers what I said in the first page of this thread. It's kind of like idealism versus realism. In my 49 years of gigging (only a month or so away from 50 years!) I have learned the hard way how to get people dancing and drinking, so YOU can get called back to play again.

Now truth be told, I probably haven't done Mustang Sally in 2-3 years, but I have done Proud Mary and Wonderful Tonight because those are two songs that my partner sings and he doesn't sing but a handful. I also have 4-5 original songs that I have been playing for years and I mix those in most every night.

I'm not too proud to play anything if someone asks me to play it. It will almost always bring a giggling gaggle of gals onto the dance floor and make the club owner smile. In the end, if you can please the crowd, you can please the guy who hired you and THAT is the name of the game.

And yes, after all these years, I still have a hell of a lot of fun doing it.

And there it is!

I did read your posts, but I was so far behind in these discussions.

But the interesting thing is, we've got five guys in this cover band,

4 of us are on the same page, one guy is not very happy with all the songs, and he's vocal about it. I keep telling him the difference between him and me, is I'm okay with the compromise.

Truth is, we're not just doing the songs that we'd considered the ones that have been over played,

we've got plenty of music in there that doesn't fall into "Column A" but- they are still well known, popular hits.

Not much in the way of obscurity in our set list, but you will recognize just about every
tune we'd play in any given night. And we get a lot of compliments on the song selection.

it's pretty awesome that they liked you but you're still an individual who have your own preferences. It was the right things. It should always be doing what you love first.

I've been doing this since the mid/late 70s, if I didn't love playing, I'd have hung it up a long time ago. The key for me is I'm having fun and I enjoy playing with these guys.
The music / song list to me is not a sell out, it's doing the stuff that is accessible to a wide audience.

I mean i'd much rather see a band play their own compositions rather than cover versions. It's just not creative rehashing the works of others constantly. That is not being an artist that's really just being an interpreter of someone else's music.

Ok if you like that and that's what you want to be. But IMO people should be striving for something a bit more individual.

That's why there's so many players that don't have their own style or anything. Probably 'cos they're all playing the same songs someone else wrote.

I have a cover band that I do for FUN and nothing else. There are four of us in the band and we all bring songs to the table and vote. If one of us doesn't like it then we don't do it. Simple, there's no arguements and we pretty much know what to bring and what not to bring by now. Here are some songs we do;

Common people - pulp
1979 - smashing pumpkins
lonely boy - black keys
don't you forget about me - simple minds
can't stand me now - libertines
fell in love with a girl - whte stripes
new rose - the damned
steady as she goes - raconteurs
give it away - chili peppers
everlong - foo fighters
kick out the jams - mc5
i wanna be sedated - ramones

I have to say every time we play we always get people on their feet and as far as I know our set is prstty fresh on the pub/club circuit here in Wales. _Proving you don't have to do songs you dislike just to get gigs. All you need is a good set, simple.

Well then the patrons missed out on a great song that never gets old. Too bad.

Point taken, and I do agree with you.

I was in an originals band for 12 years, we have only recently parted ways, the Bass Player decided to move back to New Brunswick. We wrote, recorded about 30 songs.

Some great music came out of that, wouldn't trade it for the world. the songs went over great on the rare occasion that we'd play out. The Dummer and I are now on a new project with a new bass player, and that will also continue on with originals.

But I also joined the cover band to do the Benefit, it was supposed to be a one and done thing, but we had a lot of fun getting getting prepared for that show, and it really did go over quite well, so we all decided, we'd continue on.

I wouldn't even mention originals to these guys (even though I have plenty to show them). It's not "the mission"... There's a time and place for all of this. The cover band aint one of them.

Thing is, I'm opened for anything. As long as people get along, and everyone is enjoying the work, it's a winning situation. I just like playing with others and will do it as much as possible, in almost any situation.
