it was a tiny Casio with one speaker - looked something like this:

Oh wow that brings back memories of driving my parents nuts in the back of the car.

If you're thinking of taking lessons or do two hand playing, you should consider picking up something bigger too. While 88 keys is the small piano standard, you seldom need more than 76 for normal two hand playing, and can get away with a 61-key too. But smaller than that, and you get limited. A 49 key keyboard is like a 12 fret guitar...
If it's just for learning, don't worry about the sound or configurability - you can pick up a used Yamaha PSR with weighted keys for $50 or less.

Also, the Akai Max 49 is a MIDI controller, meant to be used with DAW software or a hardware synth, and not primarily as a standalone stage keyboard providing the sounds, but you knew that?

Yes, I know that. I'm not going to take lessons. I only wanted something to use with the computer and a "12 fret guitar" is more than enough for a keyboard hack like me.

My first keyboard is a Hammond B3 "chopped" from what I know of it and no it is not documented but I do know 2 people that toured with it on the Frampton Comes Alive tour and then it went out with J Geils Band as a back up B3 as they slammed the keys pretty hard on the main B3, and it would need repair from time to time. I bought it from my friend who chopped it for the tour around 1983-85 (I guess I getting old and forgetful )

Dude, a Hammond B3 is an organ, I love the B3's, I'd kill someone to play one, no joke

Well my keyboard is not as grand as the one above. My first was a Casio CTK-900 that I still use. I need a decent MIDI controller next.

First keyboard was an acoustic piano--and now I have it at home, no longer at my parents--just need to get it tuned again.

As for electric keyboard--I have never owned one.
