Yes, a push-pull pot is simply a normal pot with a DPDT switch stuck underneath

Actually, that's a coil split.

A coil tap is interrupting the windings on a single coil at some point to give the option of taking a section of the winds out of the circuit at the flick of a switch, so reducing the output of the pickup. Very fiddly to accomplish and these days rarely done.

Recently, I was checking out true tapped single coil pickups that Seymour Duncan puts out (a $12 option). It would be a great way to add some oomph at the flip of a switch.
