My first guitar was a white $40.00 "Alamo". Bought it in 1961 in San Antonio, Texas when I was in basic training for the USAF.

Wiesbaden, Germany. My second guitar was a purple "Hoff", don't remember what I paid for it in 1962. Also got my first amplifier, a Sears Silvertone with a 12" speaker.

Both guitars are in the photo below. My friend Hamlett is playing the Alamo and I am in the middle on the Hoff.

1963. My third guitar was a baby blue "Hofner", don't remember what I paid for it.

Back then I knew about 4 or 5 chords. Now I'm up to about 10

My first bass was a '77 Jazz Bass, but my sister gave me her nylon string acoustic guitar she had. I don't know what kind it was, but nothing fancy. Technically, I've always played guitar as long as I have played bass, but just as an afterthought. The first electric guitar I ever got was a black Yamaha 335 copy that I traded the '77 Jazz Bass for. It was a really nice guitar, but I wasn't much on playing guitar at the time and sold it to buy a Kramer acoustic bass. I don't know what model the Yamaha was, or when it was made, but it was in mint condition. I haven't seen another one that looks like it.

Oh man, you and me both - I always said Buddy was my 'King or rock & roll'.

My first guitar was another of those unfortunate Stratocaster copies. I still have the body around somewhere, I ditched the neck, hardware, and pickups, figuring someday I could make it into a partscaster. Someday .... someday.....

The first guitar I actually had to pay for myself was a Yamaha classical . Bought in haste with little thought , I just wanted to get started with my own gear . My fingers were tender , the sales guy thought it best for me to start out with nylon strings. Prior to that I had taken some lessons during summer break to get some extra credits toward my overall grades at school . During that episode I was using a borrowed guitar , from what I remember it was a beat to crap Harmony with super high action , so high was the action , it hurt to play it. This was in the early seventies.

I often wonder if any Harmony guitars have low action. I have this one acoustic laying around the house by them that's USA-made (don't know how old it is, though) that has horrendously high action and needs new tuners. I can barely play past the 3rd fret on the damned thing. It doesn't sound too bad, but I'm wondering if it's worth fixing up to be playable. The tuners aren't usually too expensive to fix at all and I can do that, but I don't know how to fix the action on it, since it's an acoustic guitar. The bridge has a slot head screw in the center of it for some odd reason, too. To be honest, I've never bothered to look into messing with it. The only thing I ever did to it was change the strings on it many years ago.

I hear ya , any of the examples I've seen are at best used for cowboy chords , anything creative or further up the neck is torture.

That's not to say they are non repairable , skilled hands could probably make improvements.
I gotta say, some do sound pretty good and look cool but most are neglected and are best used as wall decorations.

Wow!

I did used to play an old Epiphone Acoustic that was like a 38, is that right?
Did they make them that long ago?
My grandma had it she used to let me play it back when I was 16.

I got the guitar in 1968. It belonged to my cousin who got it in the early 50's. It was old then. It has an old musty smell to it that it's had since I got it.

My first guitar was an unknown Hawaiian guitar that had belonged to my grandfather. It had a broken and repaired (badly) neck as a result of him slipping on some ice and landing on it on the way home from a lesson. I don't think it ever had more than four strings on it but I still managed to learn the intro to the "Peter Gunn" theme. LOL, actually only needed one for that. Still have it in the basement.
The first one I actually paid for myself was a $35.00 Beltone arch top acoustic that I also still have in my basement. That was a lot of money for a 14 year old in 1963. Next was my '63 Les Paul Jr. that I bought for $75.00 in 1966. Then, 44 years later I finally got my Strat. Worth the wait? You bet!

My second guitar was this very model, which my wife and friends handed over this weekend as a 50th birthday present. Are there really only 46 of them? Wow. 44 still to be accounted for! It is a f***ing beautiful instrument. I too have a long way to go to be worthy of it.

My first guitar was a Squier Affinity Fat Strat. It was good fun to play on, but now it feels crude and clumsy. Life moves on, eh?

The Beautiful & Talented Mrs. LMN decided for our Anniversary that the time had come for me to realize a lifelong dream of learning to play the guitar. She arranged to buy this guitar for me (after having the Store line up an Eric Johnson, Clapton, Hendrix and SRV Strats for me to compare and choose from).

Through the years, career and other Life sh*t had always prevented me from beginning. But, as I became semi-retired w/ more free time than I'd ever had, she decided the time had come. I wholeheartedly agree.

It is a truly magnificient instrument and while I in no way belong playing such a fine example, it is a pleasure to play, very motivating and drives me to become worthy of it in future.

As you can see from my Sig., I've since been well-bitten by the Gas Beetle. But I like top quality instruments and am fortunate enough to be able to acquire them.

cheers!

A real big time piece of junk Alvarez acoustic,...was glad to see that damn thing go bye bye! Never stayed in tune, was down right hard to play due to it's action, and you could tell it was very cheaply built. Very unhappy with that guitar!

Mine was a piece of crap from Western Auto, Got it for Christmas when I was 11. Bought a Duo Sonic II when I was 16. If you have a kid that wants to play guitar, save up and buy them a good one. It's a wonder I didn't get discouraged and quit having to start out on cheapos. I still have the Duo Sonic. :D

Re the last two posts - what's up with kids today? Be glad you got a guitar! For free!

Sure, everybody wants better whatevers, but you make do with what you have. Many a blues musician started out with a home made diddley bow, for cripes' sake!

Once you can afford better, by all means, get better, but don't feel entitled to your parents or others buying you the best stuff. If you continue playing in spite of the instrument not being the easiest to play, you may have what it takes. And it's about you, not the guitar.

When my mother pawned her winter coat to get me a used guitar back in the 60s, I was very grateful. I didn't look at whether it was the best guitar. It was way better than what I had, which was nothing. I am truly grateful she didn't save up for a better one, but actually got me one.
