If I keep the tone zone in the bridge which I really like, what two other single noise cancelling pu's do you think would be the best? One of guys at my go to music store thought the Di marzio 58, 61, or 67 would work for Hard Rock and Classic Rock while still covering the Blues and some Metal as well. Has Martin been around lately? I do appeciate all the ideas you guys have come up with.

The Area 67 is a relatively low-output pickup. If you intend to keep the Tone Zone at the bridge, I'd recommend the Area 58 in the middle and a Virtual Vintage Heavy Blues at the neck.

Must be the guitars, then.

I'll take em if you hate em so much.

+1...I own a '57VHR as well. From a historical perspective, the SCN's are the child of the recently deceased Bill Lawrence. At the time they were introduced for the MIA Deluxe Stratocaster they were touted as the best thing since sliced bread for that vintage Strat tone without the hum.

As far as audition tone, I never could understand the utility of videos. You don't know the amp or the signal chain. Everybody plays overdriven, and what you are listening through on your computer cannot possible match the 'air' of that amp if it were to be in the same room with you. Seems to me you just have to bite the bullet and keep swapping out until you find the combination that suits you, your gear, and your ear.

Last time I swapped pups I dropped DiMarzio Virtual Vintage Blues and Heavy Blues into an MIM Buddy Guy Polka Dot because the hum in the stock MIM Strat pups were driving me bats.

Just recently, my tech and I were discussing noiseless pickups and he is of the opinion that Kinman makes the holy grail of such.

Good luck, keep us posted on what you decide.

What do you guys think of this. Area 58 in the neck, Area 67 in the middle, and the Tone Zone in the bridge. My goal is not to play with any effects. I totally agree with ZZ DOC, You tube videos never give you the whole picture of the sound chain. One guy at a local guitar shop loves his HR as is and uses pedals which to me should only be used as a last resort. Ultimately I would like to walk into an audition, twist an amp tone and volume knob and say what song are we playing. While I know that I could return any pickup that didn't hit the sweet spot I don't want to put somebody in the position of thinking they bought a new pickup and ended up getting my returned one.

If I get the 57/62 set, which goes where if I keep the Tone Zone in the bridge?, and are the Fat 50's compatible with the Tone Zone in the bridge? I've never modded a guitar before so bear with me if you would be so kind. The thing is I don't want to have to sell them on CL or the Bay. In the end I may just pull out the Tone Zone and use a new set.
Thanks again - Biff

The three pickups in a 57/62s set are all the same. I can't tell you how two 57/62s would work with that Tone Zone. Do you know the magnetic polarity of it?

+1

And according to Fender's "accessory" page here on the site, they can be purchased individually if you opt to keep your Tone Zone installed at the bridge.

Why don't you like the sound of SCNs? What do you want to achieve that SCN's don't allow you to?

Personally, I like them- I don't see the fuss about how bad they are- to me, they are as good as most Strat pickups. I've got them in my American deluxe.. Wouldn't change them and they are one of my favorites.

I think a tone zone is going to be too hot for 57/62 set. Personally I would go for laces, perhaps an emerald at the neck and in the bridge. Or even Hot Gold sensors, or Dimarzio Area.. Or HS2.

Laces- they were good enough for Clapton.. Thing is, everyone's tastes are different. Maybe try a pickup forum like at Seymour Duncan :)

Thanks to all for your opionions. The general consensus among the guys who have been around a while meaning over fifty years old, btw I'm fifty myself, appears to be the Fat 50's or the 57/62 set.
I do like the Scn's and the Tone Zone for alot of things but I keep twisting the tone knobs looking for the sweet spot.
Here's my plan. I'll try to find a couple of guitars at the music store that come close to the Hot rod. Alder body, maple neck with the above mentioned pu's and see which makes me happier.
Once again, thank you all. You guys have seen and heard things I can only wish I did and I truly respect that.

I'll keep you posted. Biff

Just out of curiosity, what amp are you playing this guitar through?

Arjay, the Amp is a Fender Musicmaster Bass Amp.
12 watt rms, 26 peak.
Single channel with two inputs.
12" Fender speaker.
Made in Fullerton, CA.
The owners manual lists a date of 1978 but I believe I
bought it in 1979.
If Fausto Reyes still works for Fender he inspected it.
The only thing I've ever had to replace is the light bulb.
I know you love Amps, I hope that gives you some idea
of what I'm basing my sound on.
