I don't know what pickups to recommend because I don't know what sound you want.

Hi Biff-welcome to the forum,I don't know what kind of overall tone that you want to get but if I were to pick a set of replacements I wouldn't hesitate going for a set of "57/'62 pickups.IMHO the '57/'62 sound the best of all their replacement pickups because they are modeled after the staggered pickups of a '63 "L" series Strat and the "L" series ('62-'65) were in the opinion of a lot of the baby boomer crowd, the best pickups that Fender ever put in a Strat. The "L" series had a chime that no other era of Fender pickups was able to replicate, especially with the pickup selector in the 2 and 4 positions.Just give a good listen to "May This Be Love","The Wind Cries Mary","One Rainy Wish" and "Castles Made of Sand" from Jimi's 1st and 2nd albums respectively and you'll hear the chime that I'm talking about.

If the '57/'62 pickups aren't quite what you want the Tex-Mex pickups may be more suitable, they have quite a bit of chime and sparkle but they can also wail really well when pushed through an overdriven amp such as a Blues Jr. or a JCM 800,where it will really scream. The Tex-Mex pickups are ideally suited for blues and classic or heavy rock. MY Jimmie Vaughn Strat has Tex-Mex pickups and I use it just about exclusively for Hendrix stuff, blues and classic rock.

Anyway these would be my top picks and I hope that these suggestions were of some help to you.Cheers.

First it is very difficult to give any recommendation based on your post. We don't know what kind of music you prefer or tone or famous players' tone you want to get to. Got any thing in mind.

Second what amp do you have now, or are planning to get in the future. If you give us the information we can give you a better answer. It may just end up that a little tweak to what you have now will get you to where you want to end up tone wise. It may also all come down to your amp as the main issue.

Thank you for the welcome to the forum guys. My apologies for the general nature of the post. The music I like would be Rock, Hard Rock, Blues, Some Jazz, and a little Metal. Guitarists would be Townshend, Hendrix, Clapton, Hammett, etc... As far as my amp goes, I'm using a Fender Musicmaster Bass Amp for now. Eventually I'll probably buy another Fender Amp or maybe a Mesa or a Marshall. I guess I'm trying to get the most bang for the buck. I hope that helps a bit. Any views on Lace Sensors? I know Townshend and Clapton have used them. Thanks again - Biff

This is my personal opinion only:

I love Clapton and Townsend (I veer toward Slowhand more than Windmill, but enjoy and respect them both)...hoowever, I am not a huge fan of Lace Sensors. Although those celebrated gentlemen (and Buddy Guy and Jeff Beck) use those pickups very ably, I tend to find that tone somewhat processed and "unnatural" on occasion...they don't sound bad, but to me, they sound very limited and tend to color the natural tone of the player and the instrument.

Having said that, those pickups are very good for that specific sound and that type of performance (heavy sustain, little or no 60 cycle hum/noise).

It goes back to what you like.

Might I suggest Pete Biltoft's Vintage Vibe SP90 pickups? They are Strat-sized P-90 pickups--you'll get the added girth and fatness of a P-90 but retain the sparkle and spank of of a Strat. He shields them great--heavy copper wrapping, well-selected cloth-wrapped wire and they were HEAVY.

I installed my set about 8 years ago, and have never regretted it.

The SCN's were not the best sounding pickups in Fender's Arsenal.

The Fender Fat 50's maybe your best "all-around" choice to cover the territory you mention. Clapton et all...

Custom Shop Texas Specials are good for Blues, Jazz and, can get some Crunch in for the hard stuff.

The Standard American Alnico pickups from 2000 to 2008 can do the job well for a Stock pickup if your on a budget.

From 2009-2012 Fender played with the Standard Alnico pickups a bit. Some sounded a bit too bright and thin for my taste. I played with mine for 6 months trying to make them sound good but gave up on them in the end and replaced them with some Robert Crays that suited my tastes much better.

Go on YouTube and listen to all of them I'm guessing something will click.

Also check out pickups by Seymour Duncan, DiMarzio, John Suhr, Lollar etc.

Have Fun, the search is well worth the reward.

If he wants a heavy metal guitar, those are the ticket, but if he wants to play clean, those are not for him.

I have a half dozen of those pickups in a drawer. The 57/62s are a good choice for an all around Strat pickup.

+1

I've always regarded the 57/62 set as the Strat's prototypical sonic benchmark.

For a bit more mid-range growl, I recommend the Fat '50s.

Don Mare Formvar 50s is what I have in mine (bottom of the page).

You can't tell in this video but they also sound incredible overdriven through a Marshall JCM800.

I threw it out there because at the time, the thread had no details. I didn't know what he wanted, so it's good to cover all bases.

Also, these are great clean.

What's wrong with the pickups you have in right now?

The SDS-1's are not any good clean in my experience with them. That's why I have 6 of them in a drawer and no longer in guitars.
