Forget anything I have said previously about staying with only one brand of guitar and/or amp. I'm making a trip up to the music store(Sweetwater Sound,of course,...won't go anywhere else)and try out an Epiphone Dot(Gibson ES-335)guitar. I have heard demos on YouTube and I love the sound of them,...but I need to try it out myself and let my ears decide. I'll be trying it out through a couple of Fender amps,...Deluxe Reverb '65 reissue and a Hot Rod Deluxe III(same amp I have at home). The guys at Sweetwater are going to set me up in a demo room rather than in the showroom. Will I be buying today? No,..not right now. This is for a future purchase and gift to myself unless the family surprises me first on my 50th birthday coming up shortly. I want to try it with a HRD III since I already have one,...and reason for that is this; If I would buy only the Dot and not get the DRRI amp with it right away,I at least know how it is going to sound with the amp I already have.
. :)

Sounds like a great idea. Be careful with the DRRI, the combo of a 335 and DRRI is addicting. You might go home with both.

Well,...I tried that Epiphone Dot through both the HRD III and the DRRI amp. Verdict? It sounded great through either one and the difference in tone between both amps were very subtle,...so much so that I really couldn't tell much of a difference at all from one amp to the next. I played for quite a while going back and forth between both the HRD III and the DRRI maybe three different times and I just could not hear much of a difference in tone at all. With the HRD III having 6L6s in it's power section and the DRRI having 6V6s in it's power section,it seemed to me the HRD III had just an ever so slight edge on the DRRI in terms of sound. Would I still buy the DRRI? Most likely! My thoughts on the Dot,...very good quality instrument for the price and I loved the sound,...nice rich deep tone coming out of those hum buckers. Totally different sound than my Strat! Am I going to buy it?
Yes,...eventually,...unless I receive it as a gift first. :D

I looked at the Dot but didn't like the neck shape or the pups. It also felt 'cheap' compared w/ the Gibby 335. 'Course it was ¼ the price of the Gibby. But I passed.

Instead, I got my Heritage H-535:

In case you haven't heard about Heritage Guitars, they're produced in Kalamazoo, MI in the old Gibson Factory, on old Gibson Tooling, by 20, 30 & 40 yr. experienced ex-Gibson employees, who made all of the famous old Gibsons until Gibson pulled out of Kalamazoo in 1985. They literally out-Gibson Gibson today !

A lot of people don't know Heritage because they do no advertising. Yet they sell every guitar they produce (quite a few of them overseas). Lots of artists use them. Alvin Lee threw away decades of playing ES335s in favor of the Heritage H-535 (years before he had an endorsement deal and a signature model).

The H-535 is just short of hand-built (Heritage won't specify this because some machining is used, but they do say 90% handmade) unlike the modern Gibsons and Epi's.

It is ½ the cost of a new Gibby, and much better quality. See: http://www.heritageguitar.com/models/h535almsb_specs.html

I got my used '10 H-535 (in virtually unplayed condition) for $1,000 shipped w/ HSC. It is somewhat rare in that Heritage produces very few solid color guitars. They tend toward beautiful 'bursts' and 'trans' finishes. Mine is a double-bound mahogany neck/body (specified by orig. owner), 22 Frets, 24.75" scale, Seth Lover humbuckers, bound Brazilian Rosewood fretboard, Grover Rotomatic tuners w/ a beautiful Black nitro finish.

That's a lot more Guitar and value-for-money than an Epi Dot.

Check em out !

cheers!

I would take a Heritage guitar over a Gibson any day, unless of course it was one that pre-dated the move from Kalamazoo. The guys at Heritage are either some of the best luthiers that Gibson employed at Kalamazoo or were trained by these same people, either way they are top notch luthiers. In many cases I would even take an Epi over a current Gibson unless it was a Custom Shop model,I've seen too many substandard Gibbys and heard so many horror stories in the recent past to trust a Gibson.I have yet to come across a recent Epi that is substandard and after owning 6-so far-I am quite confident that if I buy and Epi,I will be getting a quality, trouble free guitar.

A lot of the MIJ Gibson copies by Orville and Oville by Gibson as well as Edwards and Burny etc. also are head and shoulders over Gibsons in every way,all you have to do is to play a couple of the incredible examples that Blinkers owns to verify that, but you can take my word for it.
