Anyone else see the BBC documentary about hendrix the other day?

Unsure if its a new one or not, id certainly seen most of the clips previously, but they had some great concert footage id never seen before that had me jumping out of my seat and cranking the volume up. Heres a link to it on iplayer if anyones interested (though im unsure if iplayer works outside the uk?)

Cher recently guested on David Letterman's CBS talk show in the US. CBS repeated the show last week. Somehow Letterman worked into asking her about Jimi Hendrix, and he asked a most excellent question along the lines of, "If he had not died, what would he be playing today?" I am paraphrasing because I don't remember exactly how he worded it, but it was a very good question indeed.

Okay, you've got me intrigued. What did Cher say in response..?

A friend of mine on another musician forum sent me the complete Jimi at the Royal Albert Hall videos taken by an either French or German film crew in '67 or '68,I have the concerts in vinyl form but to see him playing these same songs is just spine chilling. Thankfully Janie hendrix hasn't gotten her mitts on it and can't do anything about what they do with it outside of the U.S. No doubt she'd probably release it in bits and pieces and charge exorbitant prices for it if she ever got control of it.In think that if Jimi were alive today he would be writing guitar oriented electronic symphonies along the lines of some of Frank Marino's recent releases-he definitely would be doing something decidedly out of step with the rest of the music industry. He always marched to his own drummer.

To get a perspective on how fabulous Cher looks for her age consider that she and Letterman are roughly the same age. She in fact is almost a year older! It is remarkable. Following a brief discussion of Janis Joplin, her response when asked about Jimi Hendrix went something like this:

"Well, I didn't know him well but we were doing this concert at Madison Square Garden and uh...everybody was rushing around and you know. And I was just standing there and he came up. And we just started talking. And I thought what a nice, he so sweet and sort of boyish, you know and I knew he was probably high but he was so like so very, very pleasant and very polite."

(Letterman: "When you think about it and I think he died at 27 or 28. And he had a career that lasted I don't know, 3 or 4 years. But was there a uh greater guitar player in the world of rock and roll?")

"Well there are great guitar players, but he was so different, his style was so exceptional that there can never be another him. There are other guitar players. Eric Clapton is a great guitar player. But there can never be another him, because he came out he looked so wild. You know he he he he had so much like going on you know like all his clothes and how fabulous and men don't do that. And he was very very gentle I felt in my experience with him."

(Letterman: "...why did we let that happen to this guy, you know. Why did we let this happen to Janis Joplin. You know that they're gone. What would Jimi Hendrix be like today. I mean he'd still be getting it done don't you think?")

"You know I don't know, but I think that sometimes the best thing you can do for your career is die." (huge audience laughs and applause.)

(Letterman: "You know...we've been trying to get him on the show....")

That essentially was it. I thought his question was better than her answer.
