I composed a whole instrumental (can't sing to save my life) song in an open G tuning, recorded it with other layers and then it occured to me one of the melodies was pretty darn close to parts of the vocal melody from Fearless by Pink Floyd.

Of course, I know that a song is more than notes or chord progressions. My point was that it's impossible to write something musically that's not going to be eventually similar with something else, as far as notes are concerned. You just make it your own with other elements.

Let me clarify myself, again. By writing your own lyrics, melody, etc. despite what selection of the 12 notes we have to use, that's how you can make it your own creation. For example: How many songs are there that have an E A D chord progression, yet can still not sound exactly the same, when you add those other elements to it.

An audience wouldn't have anything to do with a song, other than the fact that they either like it or not, or are the ones whom you perform it in front of to begin with. I'm not sure what you are getting at by saying they own it first.

Couldn't agree more. There are many a Tom Petty song that have a common chord progression and choice of chords used as with Iron Maiden but you can't mistake one for the other. I love them both.

I started writing an acoustic song in drop D for my mother shortly after she passed away in 2010. It was a way of helping me cope with her dying. It's a pretty sounding, easy listening, sort of country/rock style song. I thought I had done a bang-up job coming up with an interesting riff and I was so proud of it. I played it for a friend who is a lot more interested in country music than I am and he pointed out it was very similar to a Keith Urban song (Only You Can Love Me This Way) and so he played it for me on the computer. My song has a slightly different timing/feel as well as a slightly different chord structure and it also has a bridge whereas Keith's has no bridge but the riff is very, very similar. So much so that now I don't feel I can play it for anyone because they'll assume I plagiarized Keith's song. I've lost interest in the project and never did finish the song.

I would say you have every right and reason to claim that song for your mom. Thanks for sharing.

Yup, wrote what I thought was the coolest bass riff. I then realized it was a mix of rushes Cygnus X1 book 1 (beginning riff) and by-tor and the snow dog... :? My old "song" rock it has a vary similar progression to wonder wall by oasis....

And two great tunes

Like a spiral sea unending

And I think Smashing Pumpkins grabbed from those for Cherub Rock

I thought I had written this song.
Played it for my daughter.
She said she didn't know if I was trying to play "Fly By Night" or "Free Will".
*sigh*

I'm working on this idea right now and when I played it for a friend he said "you know the main chord change is the same as a Pink Floyd song, right?"

I think it is unique enough to keep working on but I'm curious what you guys think....

Just think of how awesome a guitar player you could have been by now if you had only spent the last 10 years practicing instead of obsessing over pickups and roasted maple necks.

Back in my younger days I came up with what I thought was a killer original riff, turned out it was of the song Metal Health by Quiet Riot.
