I only found out about Lou's death a couple of hours ago as I've been out of commission with my third bout of flu in 3 weeks for the past few days.Lou Reed basically created a new genre of music and influenced many bands such as The Pixies,Hammerbox,Joy Division, and countless other alternative groups.Back in the mid 70s a band I was in-Ace Demolition and You F.O.-did a cover of his famous "Sweet Jane".What always amazed me was how "....Wild Side" has escaped censors for all of these years and even to this day with its not too subtle referral to fellatio or "gob jobs" as commonly referred to in these parts.I readhis biography "Transformer" and that title was an apt description of him as he was just as much the chameleon that David Bowie was and I guess that's why he Bowie and Iggy Pop had a 3-way mutual admiration society, because they were all chameleons of some sort.Godspeed Lou Reed.

Lou Reed was more of an inspiration than an influence for me...I play and sing nothing like him, but those amazing (and often sordid) word pictures that he painted with his lyrics made me much more courageous and adventurous as a lyricist...I figured if he could so casually speak of such sordid and lurid occurances, I figured I could share some of my much less "base" thoughts regarding anger, sadness, loss and hatred as well. Many of my songs never see the light of day, but they're rather cathartic nonetheless.

I wish I knew his catalogue more completely; like many others, I'm most familiar with "Wild Side", "Sweet Jane" and "Dirty Blvd" but not the deep album cuts.

I love his early albums, but the RnR Animal album is my favorite.

Applogies if this seems late, but I found it today while looking for something else...

Patti Smith has some nice things to say about Lou, as you might expect:

I guess it helps one's career to have known Andy Warhol.
