Well I just watched the video, didn't hear a single bad sound out of the H&K.

5 Watts is probably ideal, it'd probably be good for a jam session as well as home recording/practice. That one's definitely on the list.

I do like Blackstar's stuff though. Their HT Dual pedal is central to my rig: that pedal is essentially their small amps without the power section.

Hi Frank the only small valve amp I have is the Vox ac4, boxy? yep I've heard people say that, heard others say it's the dogs dangly bits for the price, don't know if the other amps mentioned get the same modders mayhem ie speaker swap, replace the 12axt for 12aut for more headroom, replace a couple of capacitors for more bass, others swear the back panel needs opening, I'm sure all the others probably do I just can't be bothered looking, another thing is I have a blackstar drive pedal in front of mine with a touch of digitech reverb on 1/4 watt no modds and I hear no boxyness.....happy hunting
ps I could have ended up with any of em, the vox went with the wifes colour scheme

Only before he died. After he died he stopped using them entirely. I think that speaks volumes.

Just been trying out the 1 Watt and 5 Watt Blackstar combos, got to say I was blown away by the amount of valve amp you can get for £200 these days. Anyone used these? I'm thinking they'd be ideal as a recording and practice amp, what else is there in that power range at that price point? Marshall do a 1 Watt head but I can't find anyone who's stocking those right now.

Hex the 1 watt crappe`and just say "no" to Blackstar. The Marshall Class 5 lacks crunchiness. There are more amps that are better but more expensy.

No he didn't, he used it months after he died, it probably explains why you hear the tunes coming from the grave on that amp

I have the Blackstar 1 watt model, and it sounds great... ... through a different cab. Not too shabby with headphones either, but who wants to play with headphones?

Actually my favourite choice for "low volume" playing at the moment is solid-state, believe it or not. I'm prepared for some healthy disagreement on this (but fortunately not vicious flaming or slander, becuase Fender Forum people are the best!) The Yamaha THR10C has really nice tone for a modelling amp.

Not affiliated in any way, and I have (or had) a lot of other modelling amps. The others lack something. Of course, I have real tube amps (Blues Deluxe, AC15 and Orange TT - and the Blackstar) too, but that little Yammie is great for watching TV and playing.

Now, if you really wanted to attack me, get stuck into me for thinking about my neighbours! Really wish I had a bigger place, heh.

Darn,...I forgot about those little Yamaha rigs,...now that you mention it,...I remember trying one out at Sweetwater's Gear Fest this year. Awesome sound for a little amp even if it's not a tube job!

They have plenty enough crunch if you ask me.

I'm pretty much convinced the H&K is the amp for me. I'm using a Strat with CS54 pickups and I've found they absolutely need a tube preamp to sound right.

Modelling amps ... got one, doesn't sound anything like a tube amp, sorry. They're good for quickly recording a demo at 4am but nothing more serious than that.

How's the search going Frank have you pounced on anything yet, have you came across the Laney cub amps, head version is 1watt / 15watt cheap as chips too £180 for combo couple each of pre and power tubes might be worth a look

No one round here seems to stock H&K gear and I don't want to order online so I'm back to looking at the Blackstar amps. Coincidentally there's a used 5 Watt Blackstar in town that I'm going to look at tomorrow.

Check out a Laney Cub 10. For the money, $200 new, it's hard to beat this little amp. Two 6V6 output tubes, two 12AX7 (one preamp and one PI), 1x10, 10 watts, great sound. 8)
