Hi everyone. I have a 2013 Fender select strat hss. The guitar is 8 months old and this evening I noticed that on the back of the guitar small bubbles are forming where the paint is separating from the body. It wont be long before the finish in those areas peel off. The guitar is always stored in its case and does not have so much as a mark on it. There is no damage of any kind to the paint. I am not sure what is causing the delamination as I do not want to peel away the paint. Any thoughts about how I should handle this. All thoughts would be appreciated.

Thanks

If it's under warranty you can take it up with Fender. Paint bubbling up off the body is def a defect in the finish. Have grounds for it to be replaced.
If you really dig the way it plays and sounds... perhaps just live with it. Think of it as an unexpected "relic" job.
If you aren't really down with this strat being a "keeper" go for an exchange.

I think I've seen this before-- it can be some kind of solvent that was not detected when the guitar was painted or moisture . At least that's what I heard. I tend to think that's right.

just curious have you sprayed any contact cleaner or any other chemical on the electronics since youve owned it. 8 months seems a long time for something from the factory to just be starting to effect the finish of the guitar. specially with the poly finishes they use these days. what im saying is that the last guitar i refinished that had a poly finish on it ...it took an acid based stripper to get the poly off it and then some sanding as well. so i find it hard to believe that any residual moisture or chemical in the wood could take 8 months to start a reaction. so im just wondering if something else has caused your paint to start to bubble. recently i saw photos of an epiphone casino that obviously somehow got soaked inside and it stained the wood all the way through to the poly finish but the clear did not peel or bubble.

Nothing has been done to the guitar other than playing and polishing with prs polish.

Not really, no. Resin dries out and gives out gases for a long time. If a piece of wood has not been dried properly, you can see problems like this years after it was finished.

And yes, especially with poly finishes you see these problems - it doesn't breathe, which contributes to the delayed problem. (Similar for real shellac in the past - the new stuff sold as shellac isn't really shellac, so it doesn't have the problems. Or luster.)

Caveat: I do wood working as a hobby.

I appreciate that. I am a professional automotive painter and I am aware of what the problem was but not why it was caused. Thanks. Pictures are going to be taken and Fender will let the retailer know what the next step is. I am hoping for a replacement. There are 2 areas affected with this and if the wood is releasing gasses I would not want it just refinished as the problem may happen again.

Hi strat-cat,
good idea to check in with where you bought it, and secondarily get with your nearest authorized Fender Service Center and have them put eyes on it. They will in turn check with our guitar techs here and decide the best course of action. Offhand (though obviously I haven't seen it) it sounds like its defective and should either get a replacement body or just a full replacement.
All the best,
rob

With this being a Select, it's made from at least two different types of wood. Plus extra lamination, which also requires extra drying time before finishing. So in this case, it might not be the wood that's to blame, but the lamination process.
Fender has likely been in too much hurry, either with the wood or the lamination.

It's easy enough for Fender to fix, though - strip off the lacquer, and place it in a low-heat drying chamber for a couple of days before re-applying lacquer. It should appear as good as new, with the problems gone.
(Of course, this being Fender, they may just replace the body)

Hi arth1;
true enough BUT......think in terms of production. Now slot a repair in the middle of that.
Suffice to say, it becomes a bit more complicated.
But you're right, body replacement or replace the whole thing are both good bets.
All the best,
rob

Good call strat-cat, a new rig for you and, hopefully some lucky guitarslinger gets a deal on a select. I would paint it paisley and discount it at guitar center with a buck fifty coupon for GC so they could wet their beak. 8) :D

Still no word from the Fender rep. Don't know if its really his fault as I am not getting a lot of help from the dealer Long and Mcquade.

Oh hey, a fellow Canadian!
Have you tried just bringing it in to where you bought it?
Or have you found out who the Fender authorized tech is in your region, and just tried bringing it into his shop?
