If you ever had a guitar or bass that you have played for 35 or whatever years AND the sound of said guitar or bass if off the hook killer tone from above- you may not want to touch it with any kind of restoration. I believe when you do restore an old guitar with nothing wrong with it but years of wear- then the sound will change if you do. When I see a bass with that kind of wear I think it must have a good tone to it or it maybe would have never been played. When I see an old guitar that's in mint shape or close to it- I think maybe it doesn't sound so good because no one has played it. A "dud" maybe.
That's my logic on it. You buy a guitar and it's all down hill after that. The best way to keep a guitar nice is to not play it. Keep it in the case. Be like Nigel in Spinal Tap and never let anyone touch it. "It can't be touched"!!!! :D

This is true of old, collectible guitars. Refinishing a pre-cbs strat means that there is one less pre-cbs strat in the world left that is original. They aren't being made anymore.

An all original 60's Ferrari GTO is a one of a kind car. Does restoring it to pristine make it not one anymore? I think not. I guarantee you a fully restored one is worth at least $2 million more than an unrestored original. There is absolutely no value in saying "it's original" unless it's a showroom condition original. And the "barn find"? Every single last one of them gets restored. The farmer who found it makes $100K and the guy who buys it and restores it gets $1 million.

It stands to reason that if one wants to drive the Ferrari, it will likely require restoration. To render the guitar playable, some kind of restoration might be indicated depending on the condition in which it was found. However, the purist might be content to just look at the damn things and be satisfied.

Clapton's admitted that the Brownie appeared to have been well-played which attracted him to the guitar at the outset. He voices a preference for such gear. We can only assume it did not require any significant touchup to make it a journeyman's tool of the trade. A new but relic'd instrument does not enjoy that pedigree. It just looks that way.

This is not totally true, a very good friend of mine found a 1967 GTX in a old barn. Seller was dying and sold it to my friend cheap and knew the value. After being washed and waxed it looked showroom new and sold at Barrett Jackson unrestored for twice what it was worth. Not twice what he paid, twice what it was worth! With cars unrestored and matching serial numbers, this is where the real money is, same as guitars. He also has a '69 hemi roadrunner with all matching serial numbers but it has been restored and is worth about half of what it would be pristine and unrestored.

This is a difference circumstance, of course. To find a vehicle like that which dresses up like a new penny is a rare bird indeed.

A '94 Squier P-bass, 1 piece maple neck slender profile guitar beaten within an inch of its life, I put a sticker on it:

sweetest sounding p-bass, I was worried the sticker would change the sound. It did but ever so slightly. 8)

It's good we all love guitars, no matter the brand, or condition! Myself, the last guitar I put a chip in I almost threw it away before I sold it, I was so mad. Battle scares hold no good memories for me.

If you gig a lot in bars - you are gonna get some dings unless you stand there like a column on the front of a building. Now that's just not Rock-n-Roll is it? The dings ARE battle scars. Don't think about it. Just Rock out. :D
