Thanks for the heads up, I saw Deep Purple with ELF as the opener in fall of 1974 at the Coventry theater row J in front of Blackmore. With his 2 Marshall stacks and dressed in black, he ripped the armpit on his knit shirt and at least once in almost every song he would raise his arm and display his hairy armpit to the audience. I wondered what is Richie doing that for?

Yeah Blackmore is an Overlord and you were lucky to witness it for sure.
The cards were never right for me to experience that.
But this DVD stands as tribute to a great great contributor to Rock History.
He belongs in the Hall Of Fame for sure.

Blackmore used to be a strange dude. I don't know if he still is or not. I had a terrible video of DP where blackmore came out about 5 minutes after the first song started. He threw a glass of water at someone. He took the glass of water off Glovers bass amp and just heaved it. He did other stuff. The recording sounded like a cassette recorder in the audience. There was an interview where Paice was complaining about Blackmore. He said Ritchie told him that Eric Clapton couldn't play guitar. Don't get me wrong though - I've always liked Purple and Blackmore is a great guitarist. I liked when Blackmore whacked the TV camera at the California Jam. I think that was around 74.

I was 11 or 12 when my older brother came home with a copy of 24 Carat Purple. As soon as I heard that riff I knew exactly what I wanted to do with my life. I wanted to play Fender Stratocasters through Marshall amplifiers.

Blackmore may be weird but he wrote the book for that style of playing. Often imitated, never equalled, I can forgive him all the weirdness when I hear the solo from Highway Star.

That's probably when Richie and Ronnie began talking and the birth of Rainbow came about.

I watched the DVD last night man! Those guys so rocked! One of my favorites.
I did notice that Richie's scalloped fretboard was all the way up.
His signature was just from the 12th fret on right?

Did you get this yet? They did a killer rendition of this song.
Its basically an old Deep Purple set with Perfect Strangers and Knocking at your back door.
It reminded me so much of Made In Japan.
The first Deep Purple LP an older cousin turned me on to at 15 in 79. :)
She gave it to me.
She always told me she went to Woodstock lol.
The brown acid could explain a lot of her strange actions.

That's the concert I bought at the vid store. It didn't sound as good as the clip you posted.

After the vid I watched the 2013 interview with Ritchie. He kind of made sense. One has to look at the fact that if they think he's wierd --well maybe a little-- but consider that the guy in his late teens or early twenties was in the big time music business. That was in the 60's man. Then the super stardom of the 70's eighties and 90's and even today he is well known. After all that time I don't think anyone can come thru it untouched or non biased or without some kind of residue around the edges. I say - Keep on Rockin !!!!

I wasn't even aware of all this until now, I had heard he quit never knew any more.
But it doesn't change my view of him, I do think its sad he wont return to Rainbow or Deep Purple.

In addition to Blackmore this would also feature Jon Lord--and although he was a keyboard player & I'm a guitar player--he did influence my playing.
