My luthier’s wife will be celebrating a birthday next month and he’s buying her a wine refrigerator as a gift. My wife and I would like to help her stock the new cooler with some tasteful examples of the art but I know about wines like I know about polo ponies. Left to my own devices I'd likely pick up a crate of Ripple or Boone's Farm. Anybody have any tips to help us make a tasteful selection?

Wines from the Traverse City/ Lake Michigan area are very good. Some of the Cherry wines are very good. "Schoolhouse" winery is one. They have a wine called "Hot Rod" - it's a cherry wine. Can't think of the others- search the TC area wines.
There are probably more wineries close to you than you think. All fruit flavors are available. Apple wine etc etc-- sometimes it's nice to try something other than grapes. I prefer sweet wines. I don't like the bitter dry stuff- yuk! You can find out what the wines flavor is when you check the wineries out on the web. Heck there may be a winery right down the road from you. There is one right by where I live . You can get a really decent wine for 10 or 12 bucks.

Arjay,

Mrs. LMN and I drink a lot of wine and since we were both in the F&B Biz for many years (wife still is) we've learned a bit along the way about wines. We also have a cooler and keep about 4-6 cases on hand at any given time.

It's a somewhat difficult task to recommend specific wines insofar as we don't know the recipient and also what may or not have a distributor in your neck of the woods. That said, a nice mix of Reds and Whites is always nice.

While we buy most of our wine from local stores, we have found some really nice wines, at excellent prices, by WSJwine... that's right Wall Street Journal wines. These are collections assembled by WSJ Editors at truly great prices.

Their latest offering includes a great mixed case (12 Btls.) of both Reds & Whites from around the World - Italy (Pinot Grigio), France (Pinot Noir, Chardonnay), Spain (Cabernet), Argentina (Malbec), New Zealand (Sauvignon Blanc) and California (Albariňo, Petit Sirah) for just $149.99 - $12.50/Btl. (would be twice that in a retail store). An impressive gift for not too much money.

We have ordered these collections a dozen times over the past 5 or so years and never received a wine we wouldn't want again, their collections are thoughtful and well selected, especially for the prices.

The collection I'm speaking of is code M00015. You can order by phone (866-975-9463) or online at wsjwine.com/free.

If 12 Btls. is too much, keep some as gifts to others, keep it yourself (the Holidays are just around the corner), or they also have some nice 3-Btl. selections too.

Check em out and see what you think.

cheers!

Thanks to all who've contributed something positive.

I have no idea how big the new cooler is nor do I know of the lady's particular tastes. Courtesy of Mr. Vance's suggestion, I have learned via internet search that we are located in a region with several (apparently) world-class wineries within an hour or less driving distance. So we'll be saddling up the Tacoma and making a day trip next weekend to score the requisite "vino". I'll also be taking the cues from SBLS and "Commander" LMN by grabbing a variety of types to compliment any meal.

Much appreciated, gentlemen.

RAWK ON!

Birthday soiree are fun a pic if possible :D

boones farm most flavors, ripple red, the other ripples worked but were nasty IMHO. Mad dog took a bite out of me a few times. Mostly anything with alcohol which sounds horrible but 18 to 21 is one time only.

I'd suggest some but what I get down here vs. what you get up there, are two different things.

However- if you are after an Australia/NZ wines- Malborough, NZ Sauvignon and Chardonnay from the Yarra Valley are very sought after.

In fact, rule of thumb is not to go the most expensive, but not the cheapest either. Wines from downunder will likely be alittle more than your usual bottle.

I'm more of a pale ale drinker. I don't mind the odd Corona or a good home brew though...

Arjay...If she likes Sweet white wines? The wife and I spent 11 years in Germany and we quite frankly became white wine snobs. We ONLY drink German white wines even 15 years later! They are truly the best white wine producers in the world (IMHO).

Here is a handy chart for ya...to decipher white wines from Germany. I kept it simple, I could have gone into the different regions, grapes, and timing of the harvest, but this will keep it down to less than a page and something you can through onto the old phone for easy retrieval.

Qualitats Mit Pradiket Wines = Good for drinking en mass at a party.
Kabinet Wines = A little higher quality, good table wine, but still good for parties too.
Spatelese = Good solid wines and entry level to real sweetness.
Auslese = Now you're talking, very nice quality, great sweetness, full fruity flavor and my personal favorite!
Beren Auslese = These are for special occasions, a sipping during conversations, very sweet and fruity.
Icewine = This is the sweetest of the bunch, these grapes are picked during the first freeze of the season and these wines are for sipping only.

The Germans are very proud of their wines and it is a very regulated industry. But the best thing about their wines, they are all natural and I have never had a hangover after partaking.

Get boxes of wine. They stack easier, so more wine.

There are a lot of wineries where I live. A lot of tourists come to this area just for the wine. I wouldn't consider myself a connoisseur, but Black&Blue is really tasty. It's cheap, but very, very good. Here's a link:

Boxed wine can be good, if it hasn't been in the box for too long.
The main problem with boxed wine (apart from much of it being crap wine before it hit the box) is that the plastic bag inside the box doesn't let air in, so you have to decant it. So it ends up being more work.

And who brings a decanter to a gig?
