The last two jams I have taken my strat with me and both times
I can't get the sound I'm looking for. I'm usually a plug in nd play guy,
but I started using my pedals and the strat us not cutting it for the music
we are playing. I think it will be back to the Jazzmaster or else I've got to get
my tele back into action.

Maybe you need some fresh new strings.

What kind of amp are you using?

I just brought the strat out from hibernation and did a string change and set up.
I'm using a Traynor ycv40wr. I've had the amp for about 3 years, but have had very little time on it, until I started jamming again. I took the Jazzmaster twice and was loving it, but the strat, not so much right now.

That is why I keep a small selection of Gibsons...they are different enough to usually get me inspired and then when I go back to my Strats, it is like Hello Old Friend! So maybe it is time to get the Jazzmaster and Tele into the rotation!

I have found that different guitars go better with different amps.

I have a Standard Strat (MIM) that sounds absolutely delicious through a Behringer VT999 Vintage Tube Monster hooked to my Fender Ultimate Chorus.

Then I came across a great deal on a Fender Hot Rod DeVille, and got it. When I hooked my Strat up to it, I could not "feel" a sound at any setting with it...hated that amp for it, and was about to sell it or trade it.

But, behold, found another great deal on an American Highway One Strat....got that, and hooked it up to the DeVille----LIKE BUTTER BABY----LIKE CREAMY, SMOOTH, REAL HOMEMADE BUTTER.

Keep switching things up between affects pedals, and amps, etc.... you'll find a perfect match.
I currently have four electric guitars, and four different Fender amps, and two affects pedals (the Tube Monster mentioned above, and a Podal's Blooze Machine). I can get just about any sound imaginable, depending on what combo I use.

With fall being in full session, and the heater running at night, the air is dry. At least here. And it sure affects my instruments, and how they sound. Even one of the amps sounds more ... brittle? Twangy?
And I think I need to twist the truss rod on one of the guitars, or go up to fatter strings, cause the relief has all but disappeared.

So check that it's just not seasonal changes. You live up in Canananada, don't you?

I have moved away from my strats and back to gibson for that thicker sound. I still play the strats for more bluesy stuff. In one band I'm using the gibsons for classic / southern rock and another band that plays blues I play my strats. I guess it's just what feels right for the music your playing.

I also have been wearing earplugs, which I have never done before, so that is an adjustment. We also tuned down a half step which I have never done before either. So maybe that could be a contribution as well.
Yep I live in Canada.

What can I say, we're all too finicky. We play our own guitars, and after time we're not in love with our equipment any more. go out and see a band , or listen to a CD I think I need that tone now. Always searching for that perfect tone?
I'm 61 now, I'll sticking with what I have. I spent thousands looking for perfect tone. Keeping my strat, les paul, and ricky 12 string. Selling some guitars I no longer need, and getting a nice acoustic guitar.
I also have my fender deluxe RI and a Dumble copy amp.

This could be the answer to your concern. I have experimented with ear-plugs on numerous gigs in the past and guess what .. It always made me surprised how everything was beautiful again with the plugs out.

Ear plugs will definitely give you a very different sonic picture .. for worse, of course.

I'm in a covers band at the moment and the Strat just isn't cutting it for the variation of songs we do. All of my other Guitars can accomplish this but the Strat is thin sounding in comparison. It's a shame as I love it's look and feel but it cannot compete in terms of versatility to my Tele, Jazzmaster, Rickenbacker 360 and even my Gibson SG.

Such a shame. I really don't want to put humbuckers on my Strat.

Pop a nice humbucker or two in it, I have a Squier with one humbucker and it sounds great and versatile too :)

You can't expect everytime you pick your strat up inspiration's gonna come and you'll start busting out funky $@! solos or whatever. Keep on challenging that guitar in different ways until you feel connected with it again. Like, not clean it for as long as possible, instead of 6 strings maybe just 3, or something like that.
