There are 2 books out by Dan Erlewine that I highly recommend if you want to learn to do your own Setups/Repairs/Mods.

1) How to make your electric Guitar Play Great

and

2) Guitar Player Repair Guide: How to set up, maintain, and repair electrics and acoustics

Couldn't agree with you more Chet, I own both and they are great books, and really helped me understand the workings of my guitars. I also bugged the heck out of my local shops tech to let me watch him work a few times....

It's a great resource.

I have both books from Dan, top notch stuff. I also have Guitar Electronics For Musicians which is very good.

I would also recommend:

The Guitar Handbook (Paperback)
by Ralph Denyer

It's got some really good info in - both on setups, repairs, various famous players, guitar manufacturers, and lots of info about music - scales, music theory.

In all it's another great resource - I pick it and read a little here and there. It covers so much ground.
