No, a halogen is a incandescent type bulb and uses line voltage like a regular light bulb. A Metal halide uses a ballast to step up the voltage.

+ 1 like Minnesotastrats said.

Short answer No, Long answer yes if you wired the supply direct to the lamp
holder and the ballast choke/igniter circuit was bypassed.

Longer answer .. and why..
If this is a question about price - a halogen lamp will last around 2000 hours vs halides 15,000 hrs. Add to that the fact that a halide will have a far greater output of lumens. Any perceived economy from converting would be false.
I've done installations and maintenance for venues and can say overall the halides are cheaper to run from both the point of power consumption per output, and maintenance- just blow the dust out every couple of months. Then there's considerations for the temperature the lamps run at. and if it's lighting for a touring band halogen/tungsten lamps have filaments and are less durable to the rigours of the road.

Back around 1968 peter Wynne Wilson (Pink Floyd Lightshow) had a bunch of Aldis Star 1000 projectors converted to halide lamps. About 30 years ahead of the time when they began to be used in production fittings for effects , video projectors etc.
Worked alongside him at Camden Festival, cool guy, gave us a rundown on the gear. Really put our tungsten and halogen equipped gear in the shade though.

They are not interchangeable.
