If you imported them from an external drive, make sure you have the "keep itunes library organised" option selected. Otherwise the songs will only show up (i.e. not greyed out) when the external drive is connected. Apologies if you have already done this.

cheers

So that's in Preferences, Advanced? The keep media folder organized option is already checked. It doesn't say library but the destination path includes music as one of the sub-folders. The next option is also checked, which is: Copy files to iTunes media folder when adding to library.

Final thing to check is the file path for the music folder showing its on the computer or on an external drive?

No, the path is definitely on the computer.

In the iTunes folder there should be an iTunes library file, move it to the desktop and reimport your music. That should fix it hopefully, if not delete the new library file and move the old one back

Good point, when importing the songs make sure the keep itunes library organised option is switched off...

I remember having this issue when I bought my iMac but for the life of me I cannot remember how I fixed it. I do know it was a small fix though.

KTM, on the apple website they have a discussion community to help solve issues.. I found that a great source of information if you have any questions. I sure you aren't the only one with the issue and like I said, it's a simple fix..

Close iTunes

Open iTunes while holding down the Option key, this will prompt you to Choose library...

Browse to the location of the library. See if that does anything.

Apple bites.

I decided to stop using the small businessman's approach and use the big corporate approach instead.
I fixed it with a 30 lb. sledge hammer rather than trying to tweak it with fine tools.
I moved the entire library into the trash. Then I emptied the trash and said yes I'm sure when it told me it could not be undone. No mercy. I double checked every corner of my disk to make sure all the files were toast and just as I already knew ... all my music was in one folder, the right one.

Then I opened up 2 instances of Finder so I could double check and ensure each instance was opened to the folder of my choosing. I selected my entire library from the external ... again ... and dragged it over to the iTunes folder ... again ... and it seems to have worked. I lost all my album artwork but there appear to be no greyed out songs. I really have no idea what I did differently this time because except for the 2 instances of Finder that's what I did the first time; copied all the files at once into one location and had iTunes "add" the whole batch at once. This option would not have worked without my backup copy of all those thousands of files. The many poor bastards who have been asking about the same issue on the Apple web site and other areas of the internet who did not not make backups ... well ... let's just say better them than me.

Thanks for your time fellows!

Yeah it's always good to keep a backup folder of all your music.
