I just bought a MacBook Pro because my previous laptop has died again for the 4th time this year and I'm sick of having to rebuild it from scratch each time. The Apple world certainly wants a bunch of money as an entrance fee. It seems the hardware is 4 times the price of Windows based hardware despite using the same Intel architecture. I bought the biggest baddest MacBook Pro money can buy. I'm hoping I can avoid the frustrations and make the extra expense pay for itself in the long run. Previously my laptop was suffering it's fatal crashes while I was at home and I had the time to fix it before it became a hindrance to my work. This last time the DELL crashed on the job site and I spent the last 3 days of the job having to use a co-worker's machine to file my paperwork and email my reports and such. That's embarrassing and detrimental to my reputation and just plain unacceptable. It kind of forced me to make a change. I'm hoping the Macs are still as stable as their reputation suggests. I'm not crazy about the lack of a delete key. Apple calls backspace delete and has no real delete key but that's a minor pet peeve and livable if the machine proves to be reliable. I guess time will tell. I've had some issues with recent Apple devices so I'm not going to just assume this Mac will be as wonderful as the Apple proponents insist. It will have to prove itself to me and it will have to be absolutely exceptional since it costs 4 times as much.

Now on to my iTunes issue. Most of my music files were ripped from CDs. I have a pretty extensive CD collection and at least 95% of my iTunes library is music I ripped. I loaded the library onto the new Mac and immediately noticed that much of my library is greyed out. The songs will play if I click on them but if they are greyed out they will not play if they follow a song that is not greyed out. Before you ask, shuffle has not been enabled. This may be my first Mac but I've been using iTunes for years and it's not something simple like user error.

I've done some searching and all of the answers I found suggest you re-load the songs from the iTunes Store. I'm not interested in paying for the same music twice so that is not an option. The other thing that was consistent in every instance I found was that when people sync'd their devices the greyed out songs did not sync so now I'm afraid to sync my phone or pad.

Anybody have any insight on this?

Yes, Apple likes to hold your hand to the point that it becomes annoying. If your Windows laptop 'died' 4 times in one year, it's either a piece of crap lemon (not MS fault, that would be the laptop manufacturer) or it's not being properly maintained.

But either way, it sounds like you already took the plunge, so my best advice is to bring it to the mall and let one of the 'geniuses' take a look at it.

I have not dealt with this personally but the following link suggests that iTunes Match may be involved:

I seldom use iTunes for commercial music, but you should find
help on the Apple Support forums.

I like this site as well for tips & tricks:

Good luck!

Do the greyed out songs have a cloud next to them where you can download the song? This does sound like a match issue, maybe when the library was imported it didn't actually add the files?

Did you drag in the physical files or just add from like a library backup?

Both features, iTunes Match and iCloud were never enabled and still are not enabled. The first time I opened iTunes, which was before I imported the library, I disabled both features. I have never used those services, nor do I wish to. I have seen the little clouds next to songs on other people's computers but that does not apply to me since that service is switched off. I also do not use Genius and never have. I have seen how it works on other people's libraries and it holds no interest for me at all. I prefer to retain control over my own files and how and when they are accessed and by whom.

hoo boy did you choose the wrong company then. Apple is all about taking control and doing it for you, the way they think you might want it done.

I know the consequences of my decision. All I ask is how to un-grey my iTunes songs. If you have nothing to contribute please say nothing. Thank you.

Meaning you copied or moved the files to the new Mac, or you connected an external hard drive and scanned it?

Are the songs checked in the litle tick box?

I've seen that box being unchecked cause a song to play when clicked but not play when following a checked song.

Yah I thought of that, too K-man. I've checked a number of things like that. All the songs are checked in the check box. All the songs are in the same folder, the Music folder in Finder. All the songs were "added" to iTunes at the same time. All the songs are in MP3 format so there's no file format difference causing it. All the songs are sampled at 44.1 kHz. I know this because I learned that iTunes doesn't really care about the sample rate but I have other devices that do care and I had to go through the whole library with a fine toothed comb several years back and now I make sure anything I rip is set to the same specs including ID Tags and bit rates.

Have you logged in and authorised your device for your iTunes account?

The "GREYED OUT" songs mean that they are listed in the library file but the actual MP3 is not at the location specified, so it can't find the file. This happens if your music library comes from multiple locations when you origionaly added the music BUT did not set iTunes to move file to one central location for easy management. So when you moved your library to another computer, E-drive for example does not exist on the new computer.

If the songs do exist you can manually locate them, but this becomes a pain if it is a large number of them.

Best thing to do is to delete old library file in iTunes, move all your music to one folder and Re-Add the new folder, if you are not to worried about playlists and whatnot.

Or in preferences, there is an option called "import music to iTunes"

Even though you may have the music on your mac, doesn't mean you can play it..

Please refer to my original post. All the songs are in the same folder so the location issue is not applicable. iTunes does know where they are because it will play them if I force it to play them by double clicking on them.

The issue here is that some songs within the same album are black and play as expected and some are grey and only play when forced. Forcing them to play by double clicking does not make them turn black.
