Two weeks ago today I went to visit my uncle Lloyd whose health was rapidly deteriorating from the spreading of cancer in his system.I got a call from my sister early this morning saying that he passed away at 1:10 this morning.Even though I always credited John George and Jimi as being my biggest influences it was my Uncle Lloyd who first planted the guitar bug in me and it was his old guitar that I was given for my 10th birthday. When I was a kid he always seemed bigger than life not only because he was a very blocky and incredibly strong man but more because he played in a band and I'd go visit my grandmother's when he was 18 or 19 and the hallway would be full of band equipment, that stuff had an almost hypnotic effect on me and just seemed so inviting and mysterious.I mentioned how incredibly strong he was,one night when he was playing out,Joe "Brick" Wall(who at that time was the Canadian boxing champ) picked a fight with him and Uncle Lloyd dusted the floor with him.It took the family weeks to talk him out of taking up boxing as a career.

Anyway I kind of got a strange premonition when I was leaving his cabin that he would probably pass way on (Canadian)Thanksgiving Day,because when I was leaving I said that we were going to try to get out to see him on Thanksgiving and the strangest kind of look came across his face,I'm sure he knew then that he'd be gone by then.He was always a very spiritual and religious man and I'm sure that he is quite content in his new surroundings. He never feared death because his faith told him that there was a much better life after this one and that what brings me the most relief.

Let me offer you my deepest condolences, GS. Obviously Uncle Lloyd was a huge influence in your life--yes, you probably owe your interest in playing an instrument to him. These are the kinds of people who matter most. May he rest in peace.

Derek, I am very sorry for your loss. Be brave and strong as I know you will be. R.I.P. Uncle Lloyd.

Thanks for the support guys,I'll be heading out to his memorial service if not tomorrow then it will be Tuesday morning-all my guitar playing cousins can trace their earliest interest in the guitar back to Uncle Lloyd-he certainly left behind a lot of musicians that he directly influenced.

sorry for your loss. it's tough to lose someone who was such an influence. I've been there-it's not easy, but it will get better with time.

on a personal level, I lost my dad around Christmas last year. he was my biggest influence musically, and in life as well. I have his ashes right next to where I practice, so I can play for him all the time.

think of him when you play-a great way to honor him

Thanks so much again guys, they even did a short tribute to him on the CBC supper hour news citing his role as a popular singer/songwriter and the one-time mayor of his town Gambo, they mentioned how he fought the government to get more financial help and infrastructure for his town.Even though he isn't Roman Catholic, they had to plan for his funera to bel at the local Catholic church as they are expecting what will most likely be the biggest funeral that the town ever saw and that's the biggest church in the area,he was loved and respected by all who knew him.Even before he became mayor he was always going out of his way doing chores or spending his own money to help people who couldn't do for themselves or who were in dire circumstances and that the government wouldn't help.He had a huge heart and the compassion of a saint. He was the type of person who made a lasting impact on everyone he met.I'll be heading out to Gambo in the morning to be with all the family and will be staying out there until Friday.
