It just amazes me at some of the things people say for nothing other that to start crap. You got yourself a fine guitar with a pedigree in red which I for one would enjoy very much myself. I at least hope we will get to hear it. Congrats

I'm not motivated to get inside the contributor for the how's, why's and wherefores. He was gracious enough in his final remarks. Tone wise, I don't expect anything out of the ordinary from it. Its place in the timeline of the evolution of the Clapton guitar is what matters and that it appears to be an excellent example. I'm pleased to have it in my possession for a time. In future, it just might wind up back home again.

Back on topic, any thought at this time as to replacing the case? The Strat looks near mint, but the case I saw has certainly taken it's lumps. Thanks for sharing your new axe with us.Craig

I'll likely acquire a Fender tweed case for it. Period correct would be appropriate. Been doing some looking. I certainly have enough gear around to put this in a case to out with. These cases really get knocked about. Anecdotaly, I remember my still old friend and bandmate's '58 Strat from practically the day he acquired it new. I took that guitar out of his hands the year the Jaguar was released. By that time, the case was seriously beaten up. I never used that case, but rather a case which was built for a 60's Danelectro acoustic/electric. As I said elsewhere, I see no appeal in a vintage case unless it is in an 8-10/10 condition and came with the guitar. I couldn't speak to the veracity of the origins of the case in this situation. It may very well be the OHSC, but I don't see the value in keeping it in that the guitar is not as equally worn. Were it the case, that might be another incentive to retain it.

Anyone thinking otherwise. I'd like to know if you feel there's a certain charisma about keeping the case.

To me a case is just a case. It should be there to Only protect the contents. I wish fender cases were better at protecting the guitar. I have never had a issue with one but I feel the guitar can move around to much is the case. I would love to find a good affordable case for my strats. All my gibsons fit very snug in there cases but the cases rant that great either.

No doubt you've heard me rant about Fender cases over the years. I've owned PRS guitars whose cases are form fitted to the instrument. They exceeded even the case my Custom Shop Gilmour came in. The only one such I've ever seen G&G do for a Strat was for a Custom Shop guitar revealed at NAMM last winter. Realistically speaking, quality cases which can take a beatingare NOT going to be inexpensive. Road cases are prime examples of that. One would expect nothing less.

ZZDoc...if it were me I would keep the case with the instrument if it is the original one.

When I got my Clapton Strat, the case had a sticker on the handle with the Fender Case stock number on it and the matching serial number of the EC Strat. I had never seen that before, but mine is relatively an early one...of course not nearly as young to the series as your new acquisition!

Congrats anyway, you certainly got a collectable guitar.

Nice acquisition Doc. I would be pretty stoked if I had made that buy.
Regarding cases. You have to protect your guitar, that's number one. But just because a case is ragged, is no reason to trash it. I bought my '66 Guild Starfire new and used to take it everywhere with me. The case is now pretty worn and has stickers all over it. I love that case. Every time I look at it, it's like an old friend. Mojo has some value, it tells a story. Just saying!

The handle on the case is missing, but I will look for any unusual identifiers.

Thanks for your input. I'll have a better idea of it when it arrives. From the pics it really looks like hell.

Reframe this question on the other thread and we'll carry on from there. Now back to our regularly scheduled broadcast.

:D Okely dokely! Doc: over the years you have talked very interestingly about the backs of guitar necks in general and the slight variations of the EC Sig neck carve in particular. You have gone to great lengths to find necks that handle exactly the way you like, which I'm guessing is a big part of what this latest purchase is all about.

You have lots of interesting stuff to say about that - which the newer Forum users on this thread won't have heard. One of your masterclasses on Strat neck carves with particular reference to the evolution of the Eric Clapton model might be nice at this point.

Care to share?

Cheers - C

The motivation for this purchase was to acquire what is a 'rare bird', in remarkable condition for its 36 years this coming December. It is part of a small, pre-production run, an intermediate step in FMIC's development of a guitar, whose popularity spans 25 years, and was the first in what has become an major series of instruments in the Fender Line...both Artist, Custom Shop, and Masterbuilt. It is also the product of the nascent Custom Shop, established in the year the guitar was built. It displays the original Custom Shop logos, and its serial number is a V-series...the 57V's being the first line of Strats the new company began to offer after it resurrected itself. To have it in my stable, as well as an early edition of the final version, was a factor as well.

I've been associated with the Fender Stratocaster since my bandmate walked in with a new one in 1958. I acquired that guitar 4 years later when he purchased a new Jaguar, the year of introduction. I worked with it for tens years and came to 'loose' it, of a fashion owing to my lack of knowledg and the stupidity of CBS-Fender.

I've always preferred the neck carve on that '58 and v-necks in particular, a neck carve not popular to the masses. The Clapton is the only guitar in the line which has a v-neck carve of its kind. It is different from the neck carve on the '57 Stratocaster, and the generic V-neck found on most other Fender guitars where it is employed. It is more comfortable in my hand than any other Fender neck. I took an interest in how it was developed and how it compared with other V's and, in particular, a guitar which was built by Todd Krause for Alainlafrance in 2003, one of three so-called 'as built for the artist' guitars. When the new guitar arrives, I'll remeasure the necks in the fashion I once did a couple of years ago, and have more to say for the benefit of anyone who might be interested. I unfortunately do not own a micrometer caliper, but might invest in one for the exercise.

More later.

Such an occasion as this leads one to unveil a new word for the Fender Forum Lexicon (Leo-con?).

conStratulations!!

conStratulations--an exclamatory declaration of congratulations for the finding, buying or possessing of an extraordinary Stratocaster. A portmanteau of "congratulations" and "Strat."

Many thanks. I've been absolutely exStratic about the acquisition and the response to it.
