Hey Everyone,

I'm a guitarist and a software developer. I'd like to share an Android app I developed for music educators and practicing musicians, called Mozart's Friend.

Mozart's Friend includes an interactive music library with over 1,200 scales, modes and chords for every music key signature, complete with piano view and neck view for 6, 7 or 8-string guitar and 4, 5 or 6-string bass. Notes and intervals are labeled using music theory conventions, making Mozart's Friend a great companion for the composer or music student. One-touch audio demonstrations provide interactive ear training. Tunings for each instrument are fully user-definable.

Also included is a chromatic tuner and a programmable metronome with adjustable tones and intervallic beats, allowing you to quickly outline a chord to play along with. Transpose keys easily in a single swipe.

And finally, a one-touch backup band! The new Jam Tracks feature allows you to simply choose your musical style and you're up and running. Adjust the tempo and key with the friendly controls.

Mozart's Friend was designed to be simple, intuitive, powerful and efficient. At just 0.74 MB, you'll be hard-pressed to find a more powerful tool with such a small footprint. Mozart's Friend does not save nor send any user information, contains no ads and is absolutely Free.

Enjoy!

-James

Works great!

Nice to have the option to increase or decrease the BPM on the fly too.

Thanks for sharing!

Glad you find it useful!

Mike - as a practicing guitarist who owns several metronome devices, I know it's important to minimize the fiddle time where the hands are off the guitar.

Hm... which gives me a cool idea... voice controlled tempo?? :)

This is one of the two reasons why I prefer an old-fashioned mechanical metronome - it's way less fiddling than using an app or electronic device.
The other reason is the visual feedback, which works even when playing loud.

Yeah, that would be even better. I tried to leave a positive
response of the app, but for some reason it won't allow?

Nice app James! I haven't been able to mess with it too much because I'm at school, but I like how you can tap the screen to find the right tempo (that alone will help me out a LOT). Looking forward to playing with this when I get home. Well done!

Thanks Jake :)

I like the Tap Tempo myself - since there's no mechanical buttons, it's quite smooth and accurate

Mike - I sent you a pm!

P.S.: version 1.0.26 went live last night

I love it - I take it it's unfinished as of yet, but it looks like it's going to be good.

Problems so far:
- Tuner does not start on an Xperia P, saying "Can't initialize AudioRecord".
- Volume control controls the ring tone, not the volume, unless it's actually playing.
- No way to stop a scale/chord once it starts playing.
- Blues shows up twice (top and bottom of list)
- Scroll bar shows up flashing at the bottom when dragging

The metronome also lacks the ability to set the meter, only choose from a few pre-defined ones. That precludes a bunch of songs: http://dkap.info/oddtime.php

And how can we donate/buy?

Yeah, we're good now and like I said, I'll keep an eye
out for the iOS version down the road a bit. 8)

Looks nice, but I don't have an Android device to try it on. Any plans for an iPhone/iPad version?

Thanks guys. I'd like to port it over to iOS in the future sometime down the road :)

Arth - thanks but donations aren't necessary! If you like it, showing some support on the page would be very appreciated. :)

Can't initialize AudioRecord - that is the main issue I am working on, basically some devices don't respond to the "guaranteed to work" settings established by Android. The last couple of updates have focused on getting the tuner operational for more of these devices.

Volume control is tied to the device's Apps volume. 100% volume on the slider corresponds to full usage up to the current volume set by the device App volume.

The scale/chord demos should stop playing on their own after a couple seconds.

Flashing scrollbar - this is the first I've heard of it, will keep an eye out.

Pre-defined meter - this was a design choice to keep things simple and fast, to cover the needs of most musicians with one quick touch. As you probably know, any factor of 2/3/5/7/9-counts can be covered by varying the tempo. But 65/64? ;)

Thanks for the list Arth!

No, not the slider - the volume controls of the device itself. Normally, audio apps will make sure that whenever the app is active, the volume controls will always adjust the speaker (or bluetooth) volume, not the phone volume.

As for the sound stopping by itself, sure it does, but... Someone walked in and started talking to me right as I started playing a scale, and tapping play again didn't stop it - it had to continue to the end.

And no, 65/64 isn't really needed. Not even 23/8 (Tubular Bells, Mike Oldfield).
But 7/4 (Money, Pink Floyd) and 11/4 (Jacob's Ladder, Rush and Pictures at an Exhibition, ELP/Mussorgsky) are pretty popular for guitar and bass riffs.

Your app looks very nice and is probably very useful. The price is certainly good

Any chance you will make a version for the PC ?
